Earlier this year, we opened our sanctuary gates to 99 chickens who had nowhere else to go. The birds were rescued from a large cockfighting bust in Yelm where nearly 600 animals were found — including over 500 birds and dozens of neglected horses, cows, and goats. Tragically, cockfighting rings still operate illegally across our state, where birds are often subjected to horrific conditions and mutilations for the benefit of so-called entertainment.

Roosters bred for cockfighting are often housed close together to heighten aggression and territorial instincts. Photo of the property from TCSO.

The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office and Joint Animal Services led the initial rescue effort, and we made room for 31 of the birds at our sanctuary. After thorough veterinary examinations, we learned they were positive for Infectious Laryngotracheitis (ILT), a contagious disease that many sanctuaries are not equipped to handle. Because we already have experience and strict safety protocols in place to prevent the spread of the disease, we have the unique ability to care for ILT-positive chickens.

So when more lives from this rescue were at risk of euthanasia, we agreed to take in an additional 68 chickens – making it a total of 99 lives saved. Due to their diagnosis, these birds cannot be adopted out. They face ongoing health concerns and weakened immune systems. But we are committed to caring for the entire flock for the rest of their lives.

After surviving their horrific past, the birds now enjoy large, clean aviaries, dedicated caregivers, and the promise of safety. Their personalities are shining and for the first time in their lives, they are experiencing the simple joys of being a chicken. Their rescue was just the beginning for these sentient birds.

With this many new residents, we need your help to support their ongoing care, medical treatment, and enrichment. Will you make a gift today to help care for these 99 survivors, other rescued animals like them, and all our work to end animal cruelty?

Thank you for your unwavering support and for making this rescue possible!
