Pasado’s Safe Haven responded to multiple complaints from neighbors that 27 sheep were living in horrible conditions. When our Investigations & Rescue team arrived on scene, we found the sheep emaciated and in distress due to extreme wool overgrowth, matted wool full of feces and mud, and extreme parasites. These sheep had not been shorn in years and were living without food in enclosures full of dangerous debris — mud, garbage, broken down vehicles, hazardous rolls of loose wire and more.

The sheep stayed at our sanctuary for more than a year while their abuser awaited trial. Our team gave them medical care and allowed them to live in peace for the first time in their lives. We were able to provide them with the basic necessities of life that they had been deprived of for so long… fresh food, clean water, minerals and proper veterinarian care. With time, we were able to bring this herd back to life and the sheep were able to heal.

Thanks to the amazing work by the Snohomish Police Department and the Snohomish County prosecutor, as well as testimony from our veterinarians and Investigations & Rescue team, this horrific case has a happy ending – the abuser was convicted of one count of animal cruelty in the 2nd degree. She is also now banned from owning ANY animals for 2 years. Although we wish the sentence was stronger, we continue to work to improve our laws and the repercussions for abusing and neglecting innocent animals.

Thankfully, all of the sheep can now live a life without fear at our sanctuary and we can focus on finding their forever homes. Learn more about adopting these amazing sheep here!
