Meet Shakira

A sweet and brave llama rescued from severe neglect.

Her Story

Shakira’s past is heartbreaking. Typically gentle, calm and social animals, llamas are sentient beings deserving of our care and respect. Tragically, when we found Shakira, she was malnourished and living in horrible conditions. She was suffering from untreated leg and neck wounds from a dog attack and needed medical care.

Our team responded just in time

Shakira’s case involved 9 llamas who had been severely neglected by their owner for some time. We were contacted by the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office to assist with this case as they had no resources to get these llamas to safety. They had been suffering from a lack of food, shelter, and necessary care. Some had terrible hoof rot, parasites and injuries, and all were severely malnourished.

The neglect was so extreme that we found many deceased animals on the property. It was a heartbreaking scene as llamas are herd-oriented animals and form close bonds. Our team found one llama who would not leave the side of his deceased mate, who had passed some time ago. Neglect cases are challenging as the animals have suffered for a prolonged period of time. In addition to chronic health issues, our team often handles very scared and unsocialized animals.

Once safe, we brought four of the llamas (including Shakira) back to our sanctuary and Olympic Peninsula Alpaca and Llama Rescue took in five. We have been providing ongoing care and rehabilitation for each one, including medical treatment and socialization to slowly get them comfortable around humans. Thanks to our incredibly dedicated and patient team, they are recovering well and making great progress at the sanctuary!
