Nov. 9, 2020 (Monroe, Wash.) – Pasado’s Safe Haven last week rescued 47 cats living in deplorable conditions in a house in Yakima County, many of which had lung infections and other ailments that needed immediate medical attention. All the cats were taken to the Pasado’s Safe Haven sanctuary in Monroe and are receiving treatment.
“These cats were living in horrible conditions – feces everywhere, ammonia-soaked floors that caused burns on their paws, and no running water in the house,” said Pasado’s Safe Haven lead investigator. “We are thankful we were able to get them out when we did and get them the food and medical treatment they so desperately needed.”
This was the second large-scale cat rescue successfully executed by Pasado’s Safe Haven in the last 30 days. The last rescue – in October in Yakima County – involved approximately 35 cats and kittens that were also living in deplorable conditions. In both cases, the cats had elderly owners who had become unable to care for them properly. Despite the extreme neglect in both cases, neither were charged with a crime for a variety of legal reasons.
“For too many of these animals, Pasado’s Safe Haven is their only hope,” said Laura Henderson, executive director of Pasado’s Safe Haven. “Our skilled team is trained to get them out of these situations and to the sanctuary for treatment as quickly as possible.”
The cats from this week’s rescue are being evaluated and treated by veterinarians and, once healthy, will all by spayed or neutered. Those who need ongoing medical care will be placed with fosters who are trained to care for them. Those who are healthier will be available for adoption sooner. The cats from the previous rescue are doing well and are now available for adoption.
“We are only able to do this work because of the generous donations from people who believe in our mission to end animal cruelty,” said Henderson. “Their support allows us to take in more animals, get them the help they need, and then find loving homes where they can live out the rest of their lives in peace and tranquility.”
In addition to dogs and cats, Pasado’s Safe Haven rescues and rehabilitates farm animals such as cows, pigs, sheep, goats, donkeys, alpacas, turkeys, chickens, ducks and more. These animals live at the sanctuary until they can find their forever family.
