Pasado’s Safe Haven will be supporting several issues aimed at reducing animal suffering this legislative session in Washington state. We are the only locally based animal non-profit with a dedicated presence in Olympia, and we are recognized by legislators as an important voice on animal issues. Your support helps ensure that animals’ interests are represented in the legislative process.
Below are the priorities we will be supporting this year:
- Budget Proviso: Improving Access to Plant-Based Food in Schools. If accepted, this will allocate a portion of the fiscal budget to provide grant incentives to school districts who are interested in serving more plant-based meal options. This funding would create more equitable access to food while also addressing known environmental, health and animal welfare concerns. Legislative Champion: Representative April Berg.
- HB 1615: Limiting the Sale of Cosmetics Tested on Animals. If passed, this bill would prohibit the sale of cosmetics if any ingredient, or the final product itself, was subject to new animal testing. This would prevent the cruel and unnecessary use of animals in animal testing and help accelerate a transition to humane testing methods for products sold in Washington. Prime Sponsor: Representative Amy Walen.
- HB 1718: Banning Fur Farming. If passed, this bill would stop the cruel and dangerous practice of fur farming in Washington state. These farms pose serious public health, environmental, and animal welfare concerns. There should be no place for this cruelty in Washington. Prime Sponsor: Representative Amy Walen.
- SB 5708: Ending the Sale of Fur Products. If passed, this bill would prohibit the retail sale of fur products in Washington with special exemptions for religious or cultural purposes. Over 1,500 major retailers have already banned fur, including Washington based Nordstrom. Prime Sponsor: Senator Derek Standford.
If passed, these changes will be a huge step forward in ending animal cruelty in our region. This is a short session, so things will move quickly! We will keep you updated, and be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram. Thank you for helping ensure animals’ voices are heard in Washington state!
