Two new ordinances took effect this week in the City of Renton and Pierce County banning businesses from selling puppies from puppy mills – a huge victory for animals! As a result of these changing times, two retail stores in Renton that notoriously utilize the puppy mill pipeline have now closed.

Most consumers don’t realize that the vast majority of puppies sold in pet stores come from puppy mills. Yet every year in Washington, thousands of puppies born in puppy mills are trucked into our state and sold to unsuspecting consumers in pet stores. You can learn more about the puppy mill pipeline here.

These new ordinances promote humane breeding and provide people with more information about pets they purchase, including background and history, allowing the customer to do their research prior to purchasing a puppy. Pasado’s Safe Haven has been involved in this ordinance from the start: posting targeted 2 Minute Actions, providing testimony in support, and working with other advocates and organizations.

If you reside in Renton or Pierce County and witness a pet store in violation of these ordinances, please file a report and help hold these businesses accountable!

Congratulations to the individual advocates, the Pierce County Humane Society, and every one of you who voiced your support! And thank you to Bailing out Benji, whose research and leadership was instrumental in getting these ordinances passed.
