OUR SANCTUARY CAMPUS: THE HEART OF CHANGE

Our sanctuary campus is literally and figuratively at the heart of our mission. It is the central hub for all the work we do for the animals, from lifesaving medical care and rehabilitation to education and advocacy work.

It represents hope – for the animals lucky enough to come through our sanctuary gates…and for those who never will have that opportunity, but for whom we fight every day.

It embodies compassion – healing injuries and broken spirits and helping spread a message of kindness and love.

It activates change – by serving as “mission control” for our innovative work to advance the thinking, practices and systems that impact animals in our society.

COW BARN

In 2018, we completed our new cow barn which was the first of our sanctuary campus upgrades. This new facility has dedicated space for two different herds to accommodate the various sizes and personalities of the cows we rescue.

This new structure is providing:

• Flexible barn spaces to accommodate special needs
• Covered outdoor spaces with cow brushes
• Improved drainage for healthy pastures
• Safe access for visitors to meet the cows

Completed Fall 2018

Construction was completed not a moment too soon! Thanks to this new barn, momma Peaches was able to give birth to her baby, Journey, in a safe sanctuary environment where he will only be surrounded by love. Soon after, we rescued June and her son Tonka, saved from the dairy industry. With more space, rescues like these are possible.

DOG TOWNE

The dogs who call Pasado’s Safe Haven home are often victims of cruelty and neglect and require longer stays as they heal from physical and emotional wounds prior to adoption. The old Dog Towne was situated on a main sanctuary road, and consists of eight severely worn dog cabins with shared fence lines.

This new structure is providing:

• Increases dog capacity by 30% to 40% with existing staff through efficient design
• Provides calmer long-term living environments (i.e. off main road and no shared fence lines)
• Incorporates one-way walking trail for safety and enrichment. This is an important part of the day for many dogs who are healing from physical and emotional wounds.
• Accommodates cruelty case “evidence animals” in safe, long-term environment

Completed Summer 2020

WATER/FIRE INFRASTRUCTURE

After years of struggling with limited water supply at the sanctuary, we are breaking ground on a major project that will connect our sanctuary to the county water main line. This project not only will provide the 1,500 gallons of water we need each day, but will also help protect the sanctuary from the increasing threat of fires in our area.

This new infrastructure will provide:

• Connection to the main municipal water supply, ensuring that we never run out of the 1,500 gallons of water used daily at the sanctuary
• Fire hydrants added to multiple areas of the sanctuary including our new Dog Towne, ensuring the best opportunity to protect the animals if a fire breaks out near or at the sanctuary
• Installation of a new gate and widened and resurfaced roads to better accommodate emergency vehicle access to the sanctuary (specifically enabling two-way traffic, fire truck turn around, and emergency vehicle bypass of security gate)

Completed 2022

KITTY CITY

Previously, Kitty City was housed in a converted manufactured home that was over 25 years old and had well exceeded its useful life. Feeding, laundry, and cat living areas were in a shared space that mad it challenging to provide efficient care. Also, materials in the space were never intended to withstand up to 70 cats. Most of the cats rescued by Pasado’s Safe Haven are from hoarding situations. Due to their previously deplorable living conditions, they frequently have serious health issues, including gastrointestinal and respiratory conditions. We need to provide these cats with an environment that supports their healing and lowers their stress.

This new structure provides:

• Doubles capacity for cats with large, light-filled spaces and flexible configurations to accommodate large-scale rescue intakes
• Has dedicated rooms for special needs cats
• Incorporates hygienic surfaces, climbing structures and outdoor catios for enrichment

Completed 2023

The new specialized Kitty City increases capacity and accommodates for large-scale hoarding rescues. The light-filled design has flexible spaces for special needs cats, and provides hygienic surfaces and air filtration.

CENTER FOR COMPASSION

Our staff has been using a converted single family home as a multi-use space for educational events, public tours, trainings, and more. Since the building was built as a home, it has a limited capacity and requires significant upgrades to make it accessible and suitable for all the people who want to engage with our work. This new common building will serve as “mission control” for all our vital program work for the animals, and expand our ability to speak on behalf of those animals not fortunate enough to make it through our sanctuary gates.

This new structure will provide:

• Increased capacity to reach more people for trainings, experiences and a message of compassion to animals
• Innovative, hands-on learning space to help people take action to help all the animals outside our sanctuary gates
• Safety upgrades ADA compliance
