Pasado’s Safe Haven rescued Penny from neglect after she was abandoned during the middle of winter without food, water or heat. Penny’s previous owner was arrested for violent acts involving drugs, firearms, and abuse, and his wife fled the home when he was taken to jail, leaving Penny behind. When we rescued her, she was in need of medical care and had recently birthed a litter of babies who had tragically not survived.

After arriving at our sanctuary and receiving immediate care, we soon discovered that Penny was also pregnant again. Our team worked hard to make sure she was healthy throughout her pregnancy. She received regular check-ups with our farm vet to ensure everyone was thriving. Meanwhile, Penny quickly warmed up to our care team and settled into her new home at the sanctuary.

And on April 27, 2020, we welcomed six bouncing babies to the world! Tabby, Hannah, Mara, Herbie, Julien and Phoenix – all named after incredible animal advocates – are able to bond with mom and live free from neglect at our sanctuary.

Since their birth, Penny has been a fiercely loving and protective mama. We are providing necessary health checks but have been very respectful of Penny’s space and giving her what she needs to feel her best as she takes care of her six adorable piglets. She is proving to be an amazing mother and we are so happy for her!

UPDATE: Penny and all of her piglets have since found incredible forever homes!
