Ducks & Geese Used For Foie Gras

Many people see “foie gras” listed on a menu, but may not actually know what it is.  The reality is it’s the diseased and fatty liver from a duck or goose who was force fed over a short and painful life.

To fatten up their livers these animals have a tubed filled with unhealthy food forced down their throats twice a day starting when they are just 8-10 weeks old. Besides the obvious pain of having a tube rammed down their throats, other common health problems include damage to the esophagus, infections, diarrhea, heat stress and fractures of the sternum.

  • Birds raised for foie gras spend the first four weeks of their lives eating and growing, sometimes in semi-darkness.
  • Force-feeding begins when the birds are between 8 and 10 weeks old.
  • The birds endure the force feeding twice a day for up to 21 days.
  • The tube is forced 5 inches down their throats, and an unnatural amount of food is gunned into their stomachs.
  • The mortality rate is 20 times higher than that of birds raised normally, and carcasses show wing fractures and severe damage to the throat muscles.
  • The exhausted birds are finally slaughtered – often at only 100 days old.
