Beginning February 1 and running through Valentine’s Day, both Skagit Farmer’s Supply Stores on Whidbey Island will offer discounts to anyone purchasing and leaving “wish list” items for these island-based rescues and animal-based service organizations:

H.O.P.E.
Equestrian Crossings
M Bar C Ranch
Oasis for Animals
Pasado’s Safe Haven
The Pit Stops Here
Whidbey Cats Spay Neuter
W.I.R.E.

The stores will also be accepting donations for the Whidbey Island Rescue Fund (WIRF) for animals! There will be an information table where people can learn all about these hard-working groups. More details will be coming soon on this wonderful event, but please plan to show your appreciation by buying items on these groups’ “wish lists.” Give them Valentine’s gifts that are really needed!

Tell your friends, colleagues, neighbors, family and fellow animal lovers to do the same!

An Update from Stacie Martin, Pasado’s Director of Operations:
On January 8, Pasado’s Whidbey held our first Volunteer Orientation for Whidbey Island. It was a great success and we were thrilled with the turn out! We discussed the need for several committees and commitments such as a fundraising, foster/adoption, manning the building, work parties, networking, spay/neuter programs, etc. We discussed our need for flat pastureland on Whidbey Island in order to create a secondary location; allowing Pasado’s Safe Haven to rescue more dogs, cats and farm animals.

Five year old Aaliyah and her mother at Pasado's Whidbey volunteer orientation.

We made new friends, found a foster home for two kittens and received a beautiful donated sculpture from local artist, Julie Hougom, which we will be auctioning to raise funds for Pasado’s Whidbey!

One of the attendees we had the pleasure of meeting was five year old Aaliyah. Aaliyah was born in Srilanka and her names means Elephant and Essence of the Divine and it fits her! She is a beautiful little girl who heard that Pasado’s was having volunteer orientation and she told her Mom they needed to come. When asked how long she’s wanted to be an animal rescuer she told us since she was three years old. She wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up. Her favorite animals are Elephants and Cats.

Aaliyah has a rescued cat named Scatty Bat Be Bop. He’s a young male kitty who was abandoned outside the school yard. He and his siblings were rescued by a pre school class and all have found their forever homes. Aaliyah knows that kids can also help with animal rescue! Raising money by having bake sales, car washes, friend matches where the money raised by a child can be matched by an adult… the ideas are endless! Most important of all is by showing kindness to all animals and refusing to allow others to be cruel to animals.

Standing up for animals and telling an adult when someone is cruel to an animal is crucial to ending abuse at an early age. When a young person shows cruelty to an animal, chances are there is abuse going on in the home. If you suspect abuse happening to an animal, please call law enforcement to report it. Ask for a case number and notify Pasado’s Safe Haven with the case number so we can follow up.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or joining a committee for Pasado’s Safe Haven, please contact Stacie Martin at staciem@pasadosafehaven.org. We also have a carpool list if you are interested in touring the main sanctuary. Here you will see the work we do and you will get a better idea of what we wish to accomplish on the Island!

December, 2011-

Pasado’s Safe Haven opens a new Education and Adoption Center on Whidbey Island!

Join us for Volunteer Orientation on Jan. 7th, 1 – 3pm.
Where: 8898 HWY 525, in Clinton, WA.

Goals of Pasado’s Whidbey: We are still in the process of preparing the building but we will eventually have cats and dogs available for adoption! We will also hold training and informational seminars on how to prevent and report animal abuse, the link between domestic violence and animals abuse, obedience and nutritional information, as well as a variety of other topics.  Our ultimate goal is to obtain flat pasture land and open a sanctuary on the Island where we will be able to provide sanctuary for dogs, cats, and farm animals.

Pasado's Whidbey is Located in Clinton on Whidbey Island Just off of the Mukilteo Ferry

More About Pasado’s Whidbey…

Pasado’s Safe Haven is committed to being a voice and a force for the animals. We know that it is vitally important to be available within the local community for those who would otherwise fall through the cracks. As a result, we are delighted to announce the grand opening of Pasado’s Whidbey, our western satellite office that opened in early December. Pasado’s Whidbey will further enable Pasado’s to accomplish our mission to save lives and provide educational outreach.

The satellite office is located in Clinton, just up the hill from the ferry. This office is Pasado’s second expansion in 2011 and while it is still in the infancy of planning, the eventual goal is to augment the preexisting shelter on Whidbey Island with a no-kill shelter. During the development of Pasado’s Whidbey, the office will be an information center providing educational materials on pet care and pet ownership. Knowing how to be a responsible, compassionate pet owner begins at an early age and Pasado’s volunteer staff wants to be available for school programs. These programs will help teach children how to be good pet owners and how they can help prevent animal cruelty.

Pasado’s Director of Operations, Stacie Martin, reflected upon the Clinton office site choice. “One of our considerations in choosing Clinton was access to the ferry and our rehab shelter in Sultan,” she stated. “We are very excited to be on the Island and we look forward to meeting our neighbors!”

Martin has high hopes for this new satellite branch. “We know the people here are caring and compassionate,” she stated. “We also hope to network and cooperate with other animal welfare organizations on Whidbey Island to rescue abused, senior, and hard-to-adopt animals who need homes.”

Matt McNaughton, Pasado’s CEO, is also enthusiastic about the future of Pasado’s Whidbey. He encourages Whidbey Island residents to visit the information center to find out about volunteer opportunities. He looks forward to opening an adoption center on the island in the near future.

About Pasado’s Safe Haven: Pasado’s Safe Haven rescues animals who are victims of abuse, neglect and abandonment (We DO NOT accept owner surrendered animals.) We also work with area shelters to provide another option for those animals who have been at the shelters too long, deemed unadoptable, or are otherwise scheduled for euthanasia. We also focus on senior animals. We are not equipped to handle aggressive animals as we are a sanctuary and our animals live in packs.

I hope that Pasado’s will help take some of the pressure off of Oasis for An imals on Whidbey Island and assist them in their neverending efforts to save cats and dogs….
