Internship At Pasado's Safe Haven:
We're Looking For You!

New Internships Available Now
Cruelty Investigations
Sanctuary (see this page)

When you decided to click on this page, you already had in your heart what we all share here at Pasado's Safe Haven - a passion to help the animals.

A calling that pushes you to want to fill the voids left unanswered by shelters: 24-hour rescue, on-sight veterinary care, cruelty investigations, prosecution and convictions of perpetrators of animal cruelty, writing and passing record numbers of animal cruelty laws, mobile pet sterilization to low-income areas, senior animal adoption and, of course, providing sanctuary to the many unique characters of factory farm rescues.

And now - you can get to know the bosom buddies Babs & Chester, have Blue the rescued 2 week old calf come running over to say hello, cuddle with Bear - the feral cat with the heart of gold, look out with Fernando the watch llama, and carouse with the tail wagging canines of dog town or whiskered Kitty City residents.

Interning at Pasado provides an in-depth look of the many layers and facets that are involved in animal rescue and welfare; best of all - you'll get to live on the farm! Living and breathing the fresh air of the country and waking up to the cockadoddledo of rescue roosters.

What do interns do?

Anything and everything practically! You will learn to "open" the barns in the morning. Greet the animals, check on their condition, feed them, clean their stalls, and help them start their day. If particular animals are rehabbing, you will monitor their condition and help with minor veterinary medical needs and assist with more advanced care.

In the case of rescue, you will accompany us and assist—at any time or day or night. Rescues aren’t all that frequent, but when they do happen, we can never tell what time they’ll happen and you must be willing to help at all hours.

It’s not glamorous! It’s hard work and dirty work. But at day’s end, you can sit inside a chicken house and listen to the hens sing themselves to sleep and join a rescued dairy cow as he chews his cud into slumber—as you pet him and look into those big, soulful eyes. It’s an opportunity of a lifetime. And we think helping these animals is the best job in the world.

What are the requirements?

A willingness to pitch in wherever you’re needed, whether it’s helping with licking envelopes for a mailing or pitching poop into a manure pile! You must also be in good health and have the physical ability to help with heavy lifting. Additionally, a great attitude is a must!

How Much Do Internships Cost?

Internships are a volunteer program so no fees are required. You live on-site in your own bedroom, with shared bath, laundry facilities & kitchen. You pay for your own food.

Will I be the only intern?

Many times we have more than one intern serving the animals. We highly recommend you intern with a friend. It's an incredible experience to share and you're also interning in one of the most beautiful parts of the country, less than an hour from waterfalls, mountains, Puget Sound, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier and other magnificent scenic wonders.

When are internships available?

Since we operate 24/7 year-round, internships are available 12 months of every year. Summer months are most popular so we recommend applications be sent well in advance.

What is the internship experience truly like?

We pull no punches—it’s hard work and dirty work. But it’s fulfilling work, too. You will have plenty of free time to experience the Pacific Northwest but the animals will provide a lifetime of memories

What Your Experience Could Be Like: Meet Merilee

Merilee, (bottom row, far right) started her 2005 Fall Pasado Internship by meeting us at the airport and boarding a plane bound for New Orleans. She was with PasadoRescuers for two months while they lived and breathed Hurricane Katrina rescue. A photo taken of her at the airport was the last time she's be as clean for 60 days. But she'll contest, it was a life-changing experience she'll never forget.

Once in Louisiana, Merilee went to work. She coordinated rescue with local law enforcement, where the first of the rescued Katrina animals came in. It was 95+ degree everyday. She worked 20 hour days. But she was doing work that would forever save lives.

Merilee went out in-the-field daily on rescues. When you intern with Pasado's Safe Haven, you're apt to face the "extremes" - moments that will be a part of your heart and mind forever. Many of them happy, many of them sad beyond words. You must be able to withstand a range of emotions and continue to work.

Merilee (above) helps a dog who had just given birth. She was found in a house, chained, only feet from food and water that she could never get to. She was too weak to walk.

Only a few weeks into assisting with Katrina rescue, Merilee's boyfriend, Grant, flew in to help, too. He was a godsend. They were tireless workers, who never complained.

Merilee and Grant - in the end, they helped PasadoRescuers save nearly 1200 dogs, cats, chickens, parrots, gerbils, hamsters, snakes, and rats from the nation's worst disaster. We will be forever grateful to them, and they will never forget how they spent their PasadoInternship.
