UPDATE, 2/19/2012 – Sampson has just spent his first weekend  in a temporary home so that we could get to know more about him and his needs.   Here is what we discovered from him overnight visit in a home: He does need help getting up sometimes.  Poor Sampson’s hips are bad and we are still in the process of assessing just how bad they are.  His hind legs are very weak.  As you can imagine, from living his life on a chain, he has a lot of anxiety – he is currently barking and pacing constantly.  Sampson does like to go on walks, but cannot go any further than a couple of blocks.

Sampson will need a patient family who can give him extra TLC and time to adjust to a life filled with care and love.

Until he finds that home, Sampson will look forward to joining the other dogs in Pasado’s Dog Towne and becoming part of the pack here once his isolation period is up. And, with our heated cabins, raised beds and room to run, we have every confidence that he will enjoy himself immensely!  The best case for Sampson, however, would be a warm home with a loving family who understands that this special guy deserves to spend the rest of his life as a valued member of a family.  Pasado’s Safe Haven believes that life on a chain or isolated in a back yard is no kind of life for any dog.

Pasado’s Bark in Marymoor Park Event!!  Join us this summer for the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Pasado’s Safe Haven’s animals!  We will have many other non-profits in the animal rescue community there for you to meet and discuss: adoption, cruelty and rescue, legislation, health and wellness, education, and other animal issues with, as well as many animal related vendor booths!  Or just come for the dog party!  Music, fun, dogs, and sun…it doesn’t get better than that!

Pasado's Safe Haven is a voice for the animals who cannot speak for themselves.

Feb. 17, 2012 - Dean Solomon is going to go to jail, again.  At her court hearing yesterday, Judge Chow said that Solomon had violated the conditions of her probation by having additional animals (an alleged five pit bulls).  Read more about Solomon’s history of animal cruelty here.

A witness testified that some of these dogs had been kept in areas that forced them to be in piles of their own feces and urine.  Defense argued this point to which Judge Chow said that it did not matter.  She had been ordered to not have any additional animals and the fact that she had additional animals had been a direct violation of her probation. He said that the court had very clearly stated what animals Solomon was allowed to have.  Judge Chow pointed out that this was the second time she had violated court orders.  Regarding her lack of compliance with court orders he said to Solomon, “You have not listened in the past, but by God, you will listen now.”

Judge Chow gave her 30 days to take care of an issue with her pacemaker. He also noted that he is aware that she has used the excuse of helath issues to get out of court appointments before. She will either be serving 42 or 84 days for violating the conditions of her probation. There is a question with whether she can be given a consecutive or concurrent sentence. The sentencing will be on March 9th. Pasado’s will be there in support of maximum sentencing for Solomon.

Pasado's will celebrate Spay Day USA on Feb 29th

This year, Pasado’s is proud to partner with other local shelter clinics in a collaborative effort for Spay Day USA on February 28^th. In honor of this special day, Pasado’s will celebrate on Tuesday, February 29th at the Spay Station in Pierce County. Pasado’s will be at Paws-Abilities in Fife, where we will be able to use their facility in addition to the Spay Station. This will enable us to spay and neuter a greater number of cats.

On this day, we will only be performing surgeries on cats. We’re offering a special “Gas for Cats” promotion to encourage pet owners to alter their male cats, with a $10 incentive gas card for every male cat brought in.

During the month of February many local clinics will be offering, spaying or neutering will be $0 – $40 for cats and kittens and $55 – $100 for dogs and puppies. Multiple clinics in King, Snohomish, Skagit, and Island counties are participating in this monthly special. For participating shelters and clinics, contact paws.org or call 425.787.2500  ext. 671. Prices vary by clinic and additional charges may apply for animals who require vaccinations, are overweight, geriatric, in heat or have other medical conditions. Make your appointment today!

Spay Day USA highlights the importance of fighting pet overpopulation. In Washington State alone, more than 60,000 healthy dogs, cats, kittens, and puppies are euthanized each year. Unaltered cats and dogs are the leading cause of pet overpopulation and it is the unwanted dogs, cats, and litters born in low-income areas who fill shelters.

Nationwide, shelters make the difficult choice to euthanize thousands of companion animals every day. *A staggering 3.7 million cats and dogs are euthanized yearly in the United States. Pet overpopulation is a severe problem in the U. S. Despite increased public awareness over the past four decades about the importance of spaying and neutering pets, 35 percent of U.S. pet owners still choose to leave their pets unaltered. Many who don’t alter their pets intentionally breed them for profit or to experience the “miracle of life.” But that “miracle” is tempered by the deaths of thousands of animals whose owners selfishly made this same choice. Other owners choose not to spay or neuter out of ignorance or carelessness, believing that their pets won’t breed – but they do. Unaltered dogs will break through screens, chew leashes, jump or dig under 6-foot fences, or even mate through a chain link fence. Unaltered cats will go to similar lengths for the opportunity to mate, because the desire to procreate is relentless in an unaltered animal.

There is no excuse for “accidental” litters. Puppies and kittens can be safely spayed or neutered at 8 weeks of age, prior to sexual maturity. Spaying and neutering helps fight pet overpopulation, reduces the risk of certain cancers, decreases the desire to roam away from home, and reduces or eliminates the risk of spraying or marking. Altered animals live longer, happier, healthier lives.

There are approximately 163 million pet cats and dogs in the United States.* At some point in their lives, at least one out of every 20 will find themselves in a shelter each year. As a responsible pet owner, you can help fight pet overpopulation by ensuring that your pet does not contribute to the problem.

Shazam can't wait to find his special someone

Unfortunately, black cats have wrongly been on the receiving end of negative stereotypes for the millennia. The stereotypical image of an unlucky black cat is easily recognized and frequently used for Halloween or to denote a frightening site or scene. The back is sharply arched with raised fur, golden eyes blaze from a face with curled lips that are pulled back in a sneer, the tail is bolt upright, and the claws are splayed out menacingly. Throughout history, black cats have been viewed as mysterious, supernatural, and foreboding. They have been associated with witchcraft and misfortune, receiving unwanted and unwarranted negative attention from Edgar Allan Poe to modern literary and cinematic imagery.

But those who have been touched by the magic of a black cat know that these beliefs are inaccurate and undeserved. In many countries, black cats are associated with good luck and prosperity. Black cats have been viewed as messengers of good fortune and as guardians throughout history, where many cultures considered them to be lucky, sacred, protective beings. In the south of France, black cats are referred to as “matagots” or “magician cats.” Those who have shared a home with a black cat can understand where this reference originated. In Scotland, a strange black cat on your porch is said to bring prosperity. Freya, the Norse Goddess of Love and Fertility, drives a chariot that is pulled by two black cats. And to dream of a black cat is thought by many people to be a lucky omen.

In Australia and Britain and other parts of the world where black is a protective color, black cats are considered lucky. In Ancient Egypt, cats were sacred and a home that kept a black cat was blessed. Some say that the ancient Celts believed that black cats were reincarnated beings who could foretell the future. Cats have always been associated with motherhood, protection, love and fertility, and in some cultures, black is the color of protection. In Scotland, it was believed that if a black cat crossed your path that good fortune would come your way.

In some societies, brides were given black cats as good luck on their wedding day. And it is believed that a lady who owns a black cat will have many suitors – which is particularly appropriate for Valentine’s Day! The English proverb states, “Whenever the cat of the house is black, the lasses of lovers will have no lack.”

Anyone who owns a black cat will testify to their ability to amaze, delight and inspire us with their beauty and grace. Anyone lucky enough to live with a black cat can tell you that these enigmatic companions are very fortunate indeed.

Here at Pasado’s sanctuary, we have our own magical black cats. Shazam is quite a talker, especially when food is involved. He can be the biggest love and only hopes to find a family who will reciprocate his affection. Shazam’s friend, Bart, can be a little bit on the shier side, but he enjoys receiving quiet attention. Both Bart and Shazam are around 7-8 years of age.

Homer is a quiet old gentleman who is looking for a home where he can be the only cat. He has kidney disease and FIV, but he still loves life. Heather is a real lover who craves a lot of interaction. She has very few teeth left and requires a wet food diet.

At shelters nationwide, black cats still suffer from the black cat stereotype: they are always the last to be adopted and the first to be euthanized.
