Gizmo is a sweet, ten-year-old Pekingese who would love to find a home of his own.

This little gentleman came to Pasado’s Safe Haven from Southwest Humane Society, who had received him as a stray. When no one came to claim Gizmo, Southwest asked if we could take him in because he was a senior and had medical issues. We were happy to do so.

Sweet Gizmo can’t wait to find a family of his own

Gizmo has a collapsed trachea and a heart murmur. This sweet boy is full of love and life, but he needs to find a quiet and relaxed home so that he doesn’t get too excited. He doesn’t get enough air through his collapsed trachea to accommodate heavier breathing very well.

As a senior animal with medical issues, it would be difficult for Gizmo to find a family at most shelters, but we knew that someone would find this wonderful dog perfectly enchanting.

Gizmo is fine with children and with other dogs and he shows curiosity toward cats. He enjoys relaxing on the couch and getting pets. Gizmo is easy to handle and does become squirmy because he gets excited.

Does Gizmo sound like the boy for you? If you think that Gizmo would be a good fit with your family, please contact our adoption coordinator, Karol, at Karolp@pasadosafehaven.org.

Hamlet is an adult male domestic long hair kitty with a gorgeous grey and white coat and soft, green eyes. This sweet boy came in to Pasado’s Safe Haven as a stray after he was discovered hiding under someone’s porch.

This sweet boy wasn’t always homeless, though: he had a microchip and at one point he belonged to someone. His previous owner had sold him more than one year ago, though, and did not want to take him back. It is clear that Hamlet hopes to belong to someone again – and we hope that he finds a loving family soon.

Opie is a sweet boy who was rescued by a veterinarian and brought in to Pasado’s Safe Haven. We believe that Opie is a black lab mix who is approximately eight years old.

When Pasado’s first received Opie, he was thin and weak, he had a skin condition, and he had wounds to his legs, but he was still so full of love and joy. His skin was sticky and inflamed and to touch his body made him flinch and squirm. We couldn’t imagine how uncomfortable Opie must have been, but he took it all in stride.

We first thought that Opie was a much older dog, but we now believe that his poor health and medical condition could have caused signs of premature aging.

Opie is a sweet, loving boy who shows pure love and joy!

We immediately began veterinary care on Opie, who is currently on medication and recovering from skin infections which have caused hair loss. Opie was dangerously thin when he came in and we also started him on slow but steady nutritional intake.

Even though he seemed very uncomfortable, his tail never stopped wagging! We treated the wounds on his legs and the swelling in his feet. The rawness of his skin has begun to heal and after only a few weeks, he has gained 20 pounds!

Looking into Opie’s eyes is nothing short of a soulful experience. He is a representation of pure love and happiness! We’re happy to give this sweet boy a chance to be in a loving home.

Opie and his caregiver, Nick

Opie is very friendly and true to his breed, he has tons of enthusiasm. He does need help learning his jumping and pawing manners. Opie loves other dogs, but with his energy level, he would probably do best with another high-energy dog or with younger dogs. He also isn’t recommended for a home with cats.

Does Opie sound like he’s the right dog for you? If you can open your heart and home to Opie, please contact our adoption coordinator, Karol, at Karolp@pasadosafehaven.org.

Chopper is a sweet one-year-old kitty who came to Pasado’s Safe Haven after he had been left at a veterinary clinic. This young boy has a pretty tabby coat and serene green eyes and he knows that he’s beautiful: he’s a ham who loves to pose for the camera!

Chopper is sweet, friendly, curious, and playful. At only one year of age, he has many happy, healthy years ahead and he hopes to spend them with a family of his own.

As a young kitty, Chopper does have a tendency to bite when he is annoyed and he needs to be in an adult-only home with cat-savvy people that will give him the space that he needs.

When they were rescued, the three remaining cats were frightened. Patty’s rescuer helped the cats get basic exams at the Lynnwood VCA and she has been instrumental in trying to find a home for Patty.

Patty is approximately five years old. She’s a spayed tortoiseshell who is still shy and needs to find a loving, patient home. Since her rescue, this gentle girl has been at Dooley’s Dog House, where she has shown us that she adores being petted!

Pasado’s Spay Station: Launching May 15th!

Pasado’s Spay Station will launch on Wednesday, May 15th, charting a course for Kent, Washington.

The Spay Station will be put into orbit at Regional Animal Services of King County (RASKC), where it will remain stationed until further notice.

Stationing the mobile unit at the Regional Animal Services of King County and offering low-cost spay and neuter surgeries to qualifying individuals will help reduce companion animal overpopulation. We will also be able to reduce the intake and euthanasia rates at RASKC.

The Spay Station will be in operation twice a week, on Wednesdays and Fridays, beginning on May 15th. We may add days as demand dictates. The Spay Station will be the only high-volume spay/neuter facility available in the immediate area.

This is a collaborative effort between Pasado’s Safe Haven, South County Cats, and Regional Animal Services of King County.

We are proud to partner with these organizations in the fight against pet overpopulation.

For a limited time only, cat spay and neuter surgeries are free for income-qualified South King County residents who live in a Regional Animal Services – King County contracted city (Black Diamond, Covington, Enumclaw, Kent, Maple Valley, Seatac, Tukwila). Services are also free for a limited time for income-qualified unincorporated King County residents, paid for by South County Cats.

Why is it so important to spay or neuter your pet? There are numerous benefits for the health and longevity of your pet, for decreasing pet overpopulation, and for the community.

According to the ASPCA, there are ten important reasons to spay and neuter your pets.

1. Your female pet will live a longer, healthier life.
Spaying helps prevent uterine infections and breast cancer, which is fatal in approximately 50 percent of dogs and 90 percent of cats.

2. Neutering provides major health benefits for your male.
Neutering prevents unwanted litters and prevents testicular cancer, if done before six months of age.

3. Your spayed female won’t go into heat.
While cycles can vary, female felines usually go into heat four to five days every three weeks during breeding season. In an effort to advertise for mates, they will yowl and urinate more frequently—sometimes all over the house!

4. Your male dog won’t want to roam away from home.
An intact male will do just about anything to find a mate, including digging his way under the fence to escape. And after he escapes, he is subject to injury in traffic and in fights with other males.

5. Your neutered male will be much better behaved.
Neutered cats and dogs focus their attention on their human families. Unneutered cats and dogs may mark their territory by spraying strong-smelling urine all over the house. Many aggression problems can be avoided by early neutering.

6. Spaying or neutering will NOT make your pet fat.
Lack of exercise and overfeeding will cause your pet to pack on the extra pounds—not neutering. Ensure that you continue to provide your pet with exercise and monitor their food intake.

7. It is highly cost-effective.
The cost of your pet’s spay/neuter surgery is far less than the cost of having and caring for a litter or paying for the medical bills when your unneutered tom escapes and gets into fights with the neighborhood stray!

8. Spaying and neutering your pet is good for the community.
Stray animals pose a real problem in many parts of the country. They can prey on wildlife, cause car accidents, and damage the local fauna. Spaying and neutering helps reduce the number of animals on the streets.

9. Your pet doesn’t need to have a litter for your children to learn about the miracle of birth.
Letting your pet produce offspring you have no intention of keeping is not a good lesson for your children—especially when so many unwanted animals end up in shelters. There are many books and videos available to responsibly teach your children about birth.

10. Spaying and neutering helps fight pet overpopulation. Every year, millions of cats and dogs of all ages and breeds are euthanized or suffer as strays. These high numbers are the result of unplanned litters that could have been prevented by spaying or neutering.

Fighting pet overpopulation decreases the number of animals who are euthanized at area shelters and improves the quality of life of animals who may otherwise breed continuously. Over time, dogs and cats who have been forced to breed continuously are considered to be “spent” breeding animals – they are no longer able to produce litters due to health issues. “Spent” breeding cats and dogs suffer greatly from conditions like mastitis and pyometra.

Mastitis is a painful, aggressive infection of the milk ducts that can be caused by teat swelling or by a blocked milk duct. It is often accompanied by cracked or damaged skin around the nipple. Bacteria enter through cracks in the skin or through the pores and an infection can occur suddenly.

Pyometra is an infection that can cause the uterus to fill with pus. Spayed dogs cannot develop pyometra, but unspayed dogs who are frequently bred run a high risk of developing this painful condition. If it is left untreated, pyometra can result in death.

South King County Spay Station Instructions

The Patients:

Dogs: must be at least 4 months old & arrive wearing a well-fitting collar and be on a leash. No dogs over 70lbs, due to space limitations.

Cats: must be at least 2 lbs and arrive in their own secure carrier or box (PLEASE…one cat per carrier). Carrier MUST be in good working condition and able to securely contain the animal. If a cat escapes a carrier/box, we cannot be held responsible. Cats that arrive in humane live traps need to go home in a secure carrier, not a trap.

Steps to fixing your pet…

1. No food or water after 10pm the night before surgery, unless under 5lbs.

2. Arrive at the scheduled location at 6:45AM.

a. Arriving early will not place you higher on the list. We fill the spaces based on size, sex, species, priority and the time that we have each day. Due to space limitations, we cannot guarantee that your pet will get a spot that day.

3. Please bring:

a. 2 bath towels per pet (these will be returned at pick-up.)

b. Medical records if you have them. Note: Blood work is recommended for pets over five years of age and required for pets eight years or older. Please bring in a result no more than two weeks old.

c. We recommend that all patients go home with a “cone” collar to protect them from damaging the surgery site, and take home pain medications. These are $5 cash/each.

4. Leave your Pet in the car when you arrive, fill out your paperwork, then you will be asked to bring your pet for loading. Pick up times will be announced at this time.

a. Someone else can pick up your pet(s) for you, but you can’t ask for an earlier/later time for pickup.

Qualifying Low Income Status

Household members 1 person in household 2 people 3 people 4 people 5 people 6 people

at or below the $45,000 $52,000 $58,500 $65,000 $70,200 $75,400

NOTE: No sick animals can be brought to the Spay Station. Please take them to your local vet and get them healthy before you bring them for Spay or Neuter surgery. We have a responsibility to every animal who boards our facility, and cross-contamination from canine or feline diseases or sicknesses is a threat to all who use our services…including your own pets.
