Animal Abuser Sent to Jail - Convicted on 11 Counts of Animal Cruelty.

SENTENCING: September 9, 2009
Jake Rider was sentenced to six months in jail on one felony count of animal cruelty, a 30-month suspended sentence for ten additional gross misdemeanors, and 24-months of supervised probation. Mr. Rider also lost his right to own animals for seven years, his right to own firearms, and his right to vote.

Mr. Rider was prosecuted under the state’s 1994 Animal Cruelty Act, named “The Pasado Law.”

“We are pleased to see some justice done after a year-and-a-half of delays in this case,” said Kristin P., Animal Care Manager for Pasado’s Safe Haven. "However, we think six months is grossly inadequate compared to the suffering endured by Mr. Rider’s animals."

"Today’s sentencing does send a warning to animal abusers,” said Kristin. “You will be prosecuted and, if convicted, you will pay for your crime.”

In 2007, Pasado’s Safe Haven in Monroe, WA, was contacted by King County Animal Control and asked to assist in the rescue of 24 starving animals on Mr. Rider’s Covington property. Pasado’s Animal Cruelty Investigator and PasadoRescuers, working with King County Animal Control, removed 22 starving animals. Two other animals died before they could be rescued. The animals included calves, sheep, goats, horses, geese, chickens and a llama – many of them young.

CRUELTY TRIAL FINALLY
After nearly two years in progress
and several delays and postponements!

The King County sheriff called Pasado’s Safe Haven when they seized animals in desperate need of help in October of 2007. Nearly two years later will we finally see justice?

Pre trial motions were heard in the cruelty trial of
Jake Rider on Monday July 6th, 2009.

Pasado's Safe Haven was at the July 6th Court Appearance to be a voice for the animals!
We support King County Prosecuting Attorney Zach Elsner and applaud all of those who have worked tirelessly on this case. Our deepest appreciation to those who have made their voice known for the animals who made it, and for those who never had a chance.
