Our spirits were at their highest around the Pasado's office.  All of the hard work that we had done to rescue so many animals had been noticed by the Seattle Seahawks!   The Seahawks had just posed with many of the animals we had saved from lives of suffering for a stunning compassion calendar.  We know that it will ultimately help us save so many more animals in need.

Then we got the call.  It was too late to save this goat. He had been tied to a tree and had been shot, cruelly over and over again by bow and arrow. His body was left aside a trail like garbage amongst some junk food wrappers.

The reporting person's dog had escaped and he had been searching the woods to find her.  That's when he saw the rope -hanging from a tree.  The goat lay nearby with many arrow wounds.  His mouth was full of blood and at this time it is unclear as to exactly how else these cowards had tortured this poor beautiful creature.  However, one thing was certain.  This goat had suffered tremendously.  He had died a horrible, gruesome death.   He must have felt agonizing fear.

Within minutes we were on our way to help. In attempts to find the killer, we would offer a $5000 REWARD for information leading to the arrest, prosecution and conviction of the person(s) responsible for this heinous act of animal cruelty.  I knew that this would be another case where people would ask me over and over again - "How can you do this kind of thing?  How can you handle seeing that poor animal like that?"

When I did see him I was struck by how much he resembled one of Pasado's resident goats - Zsa-Zsa.  The first thought that ran through my mind of how different their fates were.  We had been able to rescue Zsa-Zsa in time and she now lives in an animal paradise at the Pasado sanctuary.  Her life is filled with lots of love, pats and hugs from volunteers and visitors, peace and happiness.  The other goat lay before me, cruelly murdered.  His life ended in great fear.  He suffered tremendously.  And it was all so pointless.  It never had to be that way for him.  He could have had the same happy ending as Zsa-Zsa. 

The anger rose in me.  This is how I can do this.  Turning a blind eye does nothing.  I am so very fortunate to work at Pasado's where I can give a voice to this sweet creature whose life ended so inhumanely.

I thought about the person or persons who did this.  WHY?  How can this kind of evil reside in human beings?  How many more people are there in the world that are capable of heinous crimes against animals like this?  All of these thoughts raced through my head.

It was midnight and we were finishing packing up all of the evidence and the goat's body for a necropsy which would hopefully provide us with more important information about the crime.  That's when I noticed something odd out of the corner of my eye.  Something that didn't seem to fit in this picture. It was something... pretty?

A person from the neighborhood had quietly tucked a little pink rose into a fold in the tarp where the goat lay.  My eyes filled with tears.  This kind, beautiful act happened when no one was looking.  It was something that had been given to the goat from the heart - purely out of love.

A calculation began to form in my mind.  An evil person committed this crime.  A kind person came along to show one last act of love for the goat which for all we know may have been the only love he had ever received.  Pasado's was there to make sure that every one knew about this goat so that this sort of thing never happens again.  The Pasado's team consists of staff, volunteers, and YOU who support us by reading these stories and passing them on to others.  So, it seems to me that evil is out numbered now.   You, me, and the rest of the Pasado's gang have the power to give a voice to the animals that cannot speak up for themselves.  Together, we can change the world and make it a better place for animals.
