Bird Banding for our Fowl Friends
Here at the sanctuary, our staff and volunteers got up close and personal with our fowl friends for a day of bird banding. Each of our turkeys and chickens were banded with different colors depending upon whether they were male or female. Our roosters were clad in a boyish blue, while the hens were pretty in pink. The tom turkeys received green bands, while the turkey hens wore ruby red. And, as each bird received their identification band, they received names, as well. We know how important it is for animals to be individually recognized. Our Bantam Hens were named Beverly, Beatrice, Bethany, Bonnie, and Bernice Bantam, and the naming process was enjoyable for all.
Bird banding is a brief, harmless process with a rich history. In wild populations, banding is used to track migratory paths and solve the mysteries of bird life histories and life-spans.
Bird banding has been conducted on both
captive and free-living birds since the late
1500s. King Henry IV had a banded peregrine
falcon who traveled 1350 miles from France
to Malta! Unlike this bird, our residents
will stay close to home, but the banding is
still beneficial. Routine veterinary checks
are much easier when a quick glimpse of a
band brings up a resident’s background
information, but not all of our birds were
on board with this calling and banding
process. We had a difficult time convincing
one of our birds how beneficial banding is.
Tommy Lee, one of our roosters and resident
fowl fugitive, proved to be quite a wily guy
when his turn came. But after some patience,
coaxing, and cleverness of our own, Tommy
Lee looked like a rooster rock star with his
own blue band.
Pasado’s specializes in the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of all companion animals, but we know that our farm will be the forever home for many of our rescues. Providing the top-notch care that they deserve can be expensive, but when we see how happy, healthy, and safe they are, we know that it’s worth every penny. Please consider
making a donation today so that we can continue saving lives and providing for our lifelong residents. Thanks to the generous support of our readers and volunteers, our sanctuary continues to make a difference, every day of the year.
Thank you – from Pasado’s calling birds and all of the animals here at the sanctuary!

(don't forget
to ask your employer to match your donation)
