See a Need, Fill a Need

What a great feeling it is when you don't have to ask for something - it just gets done.

Jennifer R., a long-time Pasado’s Safe Haven volunteer, saw a need that was right up her ally. While doing her 3-month volunteer program at Dog Towne, she noticed the sanctuary could use some landscaping. Jennifer just happened to be a professional gardener working for a North Seattle-based garden maintenance company. She decided then and there what her next volunteer job would be: she would provide the regular landscape maintenance that Pasado's was desperately in need of.

Jennifer worked closely with our facilities manager and then began coming out solo or sometimes bringing along a friend or co-worker to weed, prune, and plant. It was a win-win situation! Pasado's got a great service and the gardeners got to spend quality time in the company of our animal residents.

It wasn't long ago that Jennifer started her own side business called Weed by Example, which specializes in gardening with an emphasis on creating edible, healing and sustainable garden spaces. She made an offer to Pasado's to use this business as their official volunteer landscape maintenance company. It was an offer we couldn’t refuse! She then put together her own volunteer crew of professional gardeners.

"On our first official work day, we had several Seattle-based landscaping companies represented: a horticulturalist with a background in construction, a landscape artist with a flare for color, design and placement, two members of the King County Native Plant Society, and a whole lot of combined years of professional gardening experience…Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, we’re all crazy about animals and LOVE spending time with them at Pasado’s!" Jennifer happily explained.

"The volunteer gardening crew continues to grow and we’re planning our next work day very soon,” said Jennifer. “We’re all just so happy to be able to combine our love of gardening with our love of animals. And all for a great cause!"

Thank you so much Jennifer, for all of your hard work. You made this volunteer group happen, and we are all very grateful! And thanks to all of your co-workers who decided to join you in this great cause!
