I
had heard about ten cats who were in desperate
need of rescue. They were living in a small
wooden cage outside in atrocious conditions.
They had no weather protection, no food or
water, and no sanitation. The conditions were
giving them bald spots in their fur. It was
thought that they were FIV+, so Animal Control
was going to euthanize them if they weren't
removed from the property.
I
agreed to take all ten cats. They were
absolutely filthy and covered in urine and
feces. They had fleas, ear mites, and some had
minor upper respiratory infections due to the
unsanitary conditions. I drove them home, where
all ten were bathed and set up temporarily in
kennels in my room until they could be
vaccinated.
I’m 17 years old, and I don't have much of an
income, so I knew that paying for their care
would be a challenge. I set up an online gift
registry where people could order and send me
the things I needed (pet store gift cards for
food and litter, a box of FVRCP vaccines and
syringes, supplies to do fecal tests, flea/ear
mite medication, etc.). In just a few days, my
registry was completely filled!
Next, I went to South Seattle Veterinary
Hospital for their vaccines and blood draws. I
discovered that none of the cats were FIV+,
however,
three were leukemia+. After these
veterinary visits, I had placed eight of the ten
kitties, and I was left with just Tara and Moby
who I couldn't find homes for.
I started calling and emailing shelters,
rescues, and sanctuaries in WA and across the
country to see if anyone could take them in.
Unfortunately, everyone was full with a waiting
list for leukemia+ cats.
After a couple weeks of searching for suitable
homes for Tara and Moby, Deborah at Pasado's Safe Haven
sent me an email asking if I still had Moby and
if he still needed placement. She was looking
for a friend for another leukemia+ cat at the
sanctuary. I told her that I still had both Tara
and Moby, and she agreed to take both kitties! I
delivered them shortly after to their sanctuary,
where they can have any dental or further
medical care they need.
It was a busy and strenuous few weeks, but it
was totally worth it. Thanks again, Pasado's,
for providing homes for Moby and Tara!
