As a non-profit agency, creative collaboration is often the best way for us to provide care for our animals. We were delighted to recently host some veterinary students from Pima Medical Institute. These students were ready to apply their scholastic learning with some hands-on experience – and we were so glad that they chose to come to Pasado’s! Our animals were in need of some veterinary care and everyone enjoyed the collaborative experience.
Pima was started by a husband and wife who dreamed of offering quality medical career education.
Pima offers many educational programs, including
veterinary technology, nursing, and occupational
therapy.
Pima Medical Institute is guided by the belief that the seeds for future growth must be planted in the classroom. Here at Pasado’s Safe Haven, we know how important education can be. And for veterinary students, what better classroom is there than a farm full of animals?
The Pima students had a brief orientation at our sanctuary before learning how to perform some important medical techniques. The students learned how to quarantine a pig using pig boards
(images below). As you can imagine, convincing a pig
that weighs several hundred pounds to do anything is quite a feat! Learning safe and humane ways to work with large farm animals is an integral part of a veterinary assistant education.

Pima students also cared for our goats, administering vaccinations and
deworming them (images below). We were so thankful to have the free help, and the students were glad to have the hands-on experience! It was a win-win situation.
Thank you to all of the Pima students who were good sports while they got down and dirty with our farm animals. It was a wonderful learning experience for all!
