The Thanksgiving season helps us all remember the things we are thankful for. Pasado's Safe Haven is especially thankful for our dedicated volunteers. Kelley P. has volunteered with the farm animals at Pasado’s since June of this year, and she’s had the opportunity to get to know some
of our residents very well.
“I was surprised to see how social turkeys are! They all come running up to greet me. They have distinct personalities, and they’re all so peaceful. If I sit on the ground in the Turkey Barn, they just gather and sit near me or wander nearby and gobble. They just want to be close to you.”
Kelley enjoys participating in Pasado’s activities. “Rescues are definitely my favorite,” she said. “My first rescue was of the Six Little Miracles. I really didn't think I'd be able to cut it, seeing animals in horrible conditions. It was intense and heart- breaking and probably one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. The minute Angel brought Teddy out, I knew there was no room for fear, doubt, or sadness. These animals depended on me. When I went home, I felt this incredible sense of accomplishment and a shift in priorities. Six dogs were free from their prison, free from living in mats and garbage. I had a small part in that, and that’s all that mattered. I learned so much about love and living in the moment from those dogs. When I saw them a few days later, I broke down. They were all so beautiful, loving, and happy to be with people. To see Teddy for the first time all cleaned up and wagging his tail…the joy that I felt and the pride that I felt for the people of Pasado’s…that joy continues to carry me.

“Simply driving through Pasado’s gates makes me happy. It’s so peaceful. The love I feel from these animals is overwhelming. I love sitting quietly and snuggling with the goats. All doubt washes away when I sit on the floor and Rudy the goat presses his face to mine in a "goat hug." He offers up love without judgment. It's inspiring. I always leave the farm hoping to be more Rudy-like.”

Kelley recommends volunteering at Pasado’s because it’s an all-around learning experience. “It's astounding to me how much these animals have taught me about life, love, and acceptance. I often leave Pasado’s with a different perspective. I know when I leave that I've given the goats a clean place to sleep that day. It builds my confidence and sense of self-worth. I think a lot of people can benefit from that, especially if you're going through a painful life event.”
When Kelley isn’t tending to our happy farm animals, she’s working as an Academic Advisor at the University of Washington. Kelley also notes that she’s an advocate for a vegan lifestyle. We feel so fortunate to have volunteers like Kelley who devote their time to making a difference, and we’re so glad that spending time with the animals brings joy to her life.

A Message for Kelley from Angel,
our Cruelty Investigator:
"I would like to give a special Thank you to Kelley for toughing it out through this very emotional rescue.
She was there to make sure the dogs felt loved and safe. I remember
that she held Teddy close to her chest while waiting for the Vet, speaking softly to him while enduring the horrid odor permeating from him. She stayed to the end when I was unable. Thank you Kelley for sticking it out through one of the toughest rescues I have ever endured. I am truly grateful to have you
as part of the Pasado's team. "
"The rescue of these dogs has changed my life
in ways I will never be able to describe. Words cannot express the emotional impact this
case has had on my life, both negative and positive. For me, these pictures
say it all."
