A Letter for Lily

Our sweet Lily bloomed here at the sanctuary. Losing her recently to cancer was unspeakably painful, but in her memory, we are inspired to continue our work of giving second chances to the old, the incontinent, the blind, deaf, and arthritic…

Lily was an inspiration to all who met her or heard of her plight. But Lily would be the first to tell you that her life wasn’t a plight at all; it was a series of events that she took “in stride.” And what a stride it was! We will miss her unique, two-legged gait, and the way that this physically challenged gal was always the first resident of Misty’s Kitty City to greet us at the door.

Losing Lily reminds us just how fragile life is, even for those who fight the hardest and live for every moment of the day. No one had explained to this sassy little tabby that most cats had four good legs. Lily held her own with the other Kitty City residents, running circles around many cats with her two good legs – and one big heart. Her heart carried her when her legs could not; her sprit was unbreakable, and her complaints were nonexistent. Her beautiful green eyes always had a playful spark, and her enthusiasm was contagious.

A visitor came in once to Kitty City, where Lily had lived out most of her days. This visitor had a limp from a recent accident and was overwhelmed by pain and immobility. But she saw how Lily scaled cat trees with joy and greeted her with a vivacious smile. Little Lily was bubbling over with happiness, purring so hard that the woman laughed for the first time in many weeks.

That day, the woman walked out a little bit stronger…and feeling just a little bit taller. That is the magic that a special animal like Lily possesses.

Every time we think of Lily, we will smile. She made our days lighter, brighter, and full of gratitude. Lily taught by example, showing courage, patience, love, and wisdom that is seldom seen in people. She was what Pasado’s Safe Haven stands for: animals who are perfectly imperfect, full of life and love and lessons.

Deborah, Pasado’s cat caretaker, made a wise decision when she chose Lily as the “spokespurrson” for an advice column. Lily was a smart gal who already had so much life experience, and her happy, loving demeanor was a constant source of inspiration. So this letter is for Lily – and for all that she gave to all of us. Pepper and Bonita will continue the “Ask Lily” column in her memory, and we will continue saving courageous cats like little Lily.

If you would like to help us support our life-saving efforts, please consider making a donation today. Lily taught us so much about the value of a “physically challenged” pet who surely would have been euthanized at a shelter. But thanks to the generous support of readers like you, we were able to provide her with a beautiful life.

Life is full of wonderful surprises, and the most important lessons often come in the most unexpected packaging.
