Despite his obvious discomfort and dire circumstances, this regal boy remained majestic and brave...
Our dog caretaker was preparing to make her rounds at the local shelters when she received an urgent call. One of the dogs she was preparing to meet was scheduled for euthanasia at 4:00 p.m. It was 3:40, and the shelter was 20 minutes away. In a frantic race against time, our caretaker arrived right at 4:00 p.m.
“Is the shepherd with the tumor still here?” she asked anxiously. Shelters can’t “hold” dogs from euthanasia until we meet them and see if their temperaments are compatible with our program.
No one was ready to say goodbye to this brave
boy, and we were relieved to find out that he had narrowly escaped a premature death. When we saw the size of his tumor, though, we knew that
the hard work had just started.
We named him “Royal” because of the proud way that he carried himself – and the admirable way that he overcame his physical condition. We don’t know how long Royal had to suffer in silence, but from the size of his tumor, we knew that his suffering had been great.
Tumors of this size take a long time to grow, and it was obvious that someone had greatly neglected this beautiful boy. We can never understand how someone could abandon a loving family member during their time of greatest need. And we can’t imagine the pain and discomfort that he must have felt. What would have been a fairly uncomplicated surgery months prior had turned into a dangerous dilemma: would performing the surgery make him incontinent or cause other health issues?
Here at Pasado’s Safe Haven, we are so fortunate to have the help of talented, supportive veterinarians. These dedicated doctors are ready to answer those difficult calls and perform problematical surgeries. We were so relieved
that the tumor was benign and the removal surgery was free of complications – and so was Royal. After the surgery, Royal was more majestic than ever, stretching out his legs and gazing at us gratefully. We know that dogs like Royal often fall through the cracks at area shelters: people are hesitant to adopt an animal with obvious health issues. But we know the value of a sweet soul like Royal, and we understand the importance of second chances.
This beautiful boy is a “natural leader:” he’s sweet, smart, and incredibly brave. And he endures adversity with “pawnache” and a majestic air. Royal’s
crowning glory, though, would be finding his
own forever home “castle" - and have a
loving reign with his forever family. Royal
is currently recovering from his very recent surgery and he isn’t ready for adoption just yet.
Most shelters cannot afford to provide surgeries like Royal’s. They are very expensive – but they’re worth every penny. Your donation could help provide top-notch, life-saving medical care. With one click of the mouse, you can save the next “Royal” – and help some deserving dog go from “pauper” to “prince.”
Thank you, from all of the animals here at Pasado’s Safe Haven!
