Dolly's Folly

When we first saw Dolly at an area livestock auction, she was beyond sad. She was tied to the side of her pen, her eyes filled with despair. As a “livestock” animal, she was destined for the dinner plate, and her options were running out…

At Pasado’s Safe Haven, we often go to where the need is greatest: rescuing older cats and dogs, saving animals from years of neglect, and bidding on farm animals who are often overlooked or not considered companion animals.

With Pasado's making the winning bid at the auction, Dolly avoided the dinner plate – and earned herself a one-way ticket to the northwest’s premiere animal sanctuary.

So what was Dolly’s folly – and why did she end up at an auction? She’s an escape artist, and it was getting harder and harder to keep her in her pen, so her family gave her up. During her time in isolation at Pasado's - where she awaited her clean bill of health from our onsite vet - we learned first-hand Dolly's ability to escape any enclosure. She could even untie herself if we tethered her!

"We should have named her Houdini," said one of our Animal Caretakers, after about the fifth escape of the day. In the end we had to make a special escape-proof pen until she could be moved from isolation and join Pasado's long-term goat residents.

There was definitely some concern about how Dolly would take to the large goat enclosure, and whether or not we would have to do some magic of our own to keep her from escaping. But we were overjoyed that she seemed to take the transition extremely well. Since being introduced to her new home, Dolly seems more than content and has not once tried to escape!

Bonnie and Rudy are the first to greet Dolly to her new home. (Dolly and Bonnie - image above left). (Rudy and Dolly -  image above right). Dolly will be happy to spend her days with her new goat family in a large enclosure fully equipped with a playground, plenty of attention, and all the food she could ever want.

Here at Pasado’s, we know the value of a companion like Dolly. But we know that there are still more auctions and more animals to be saved. It is our mission to fill the void left by other shelters, and with your help, we can continue to save these innocent companion animals from slaughter.
