June 21st marked the official start of summer – and we've prepared for it! Pasado’s Safe Haven is nestled
in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, and we’ve already experienced unusually dry, warm temperatures.
On the farm, we have groomed and clipped those animals who need seasonal treatments. The llamas and sheep were
glad to have their new summer wear, and Babs the donkey got a trim, too!
Clipping is a special tradition here at Pasado’s and marks the seasonal “change of arms.” With warmer weather,
precautions should be taken for companion animals, both indoor and outdoor.
Your animals should have access to
plenty of water, whether they’re inside, outside, or both. Water sources should be filled, checked, and changed
frequently. And make sure that outdoor pets have access to shade. On hot days, indoor pets benefit from cracked
windows to keep cool.

Do you think your dog is safe staying in the car when you run errands? You might want to think again.
The heat inside the car is deceptively higher than the temperature outside. On sunny days, vehicle windows
collect light, trapping heat. Tragically, we hear about dogs dying every summer when they've been left in the
car for "just a few minutes.”
It doesn’t have to be a scorcher of a day for the scenario to quickly turn dangerous. Even when the temperatures
are in the 70s, a vehicle’s interior temperature can reach 120 degrees within minutes. Pets are in danger of severe
heatstroke by 110 degrees, and temperatures within cars can rise more than 30 degrees per minute.
Pets who are stuck inside are susceptible to dehydration, heat stroke, brain damage – and death. Shade and cracked
windows do little to alleviate this heat – so when in doubt, just keep them out.
Be Prepared: They’ll Be Scared
While the 4th of July celebrates the independence of the United States, it highlights the dependence of our pets.
On and around July 4th, countless pets are frightened by the sights and sounds of fireworks. More pets are lost
on this day than on any other day of the year. Some make their way to area shelters, but sadly, some are never found.
Take precautions to ensure that your pet is safely secured.
Some precautions can make the holiday a happy one, and save you and your pet from heartache.
From all of us here at Pasado’s, stay safe and
have a happy summer!
