The sweetest old sheep that you’ll ever meet! Brownie has the most relaxed, “old soul” sheep personality we’ve ever
come across. It never ceases to amaze us how animals who have come from such pain continue to show such warmth, kindness,
and gratitude.
Brownie came to live at Pasado’s Safe Haven in
2005, and like many Pasado’s residents, he was
rescued from a neglectful situation.
The winter was especially hard on Brownie, though. Sadly, he developed degenerative joint disease and arthritis in his hind legs.
He dragged his hooves and walked with a painfully slow gait. It was equally painful to see him struggle.
It was Brownie’s spirit and perseverance that showed us that we needed to press on with his care.
Brownie was receiving some
much-needed TLC. “He wouldn’t want to get up,
so we’d let him lay in a large heap of straw. We even had to bring water and hay to him!”
said Armando, his caretaker.

By the end of April, Brownie was much-improved. He began walking again in the warmer weather.
And along with the change of seasons came a change of treatment: acupuncture.
It is difficult to watch a beloved animal succumb
to the ailments of old age, but that’s where alternative medicine like acupuncture can come in. Acupuncture is a treatment method for all species,
developed in the orient over 3,500 years ago. It’s used to stimulate healing within the body by hitting
the “acupoints” with special needles which
have been shown to release morphine-like
substances called “endorphins,” changing the
way that the brain and nervous system
recognize areas of disease. Dogs, cats, horses, and other farm animals can benefit from this
traditional Chinese treatment.
This gentle old sheep continues to receive care that goes beyond normal western arthritis treatments – and he’s
showing improvement! “Brownie’s getting his spark back, and he isn’t dragging his hooves as much. I can tell
that acupuncture will be very helpful for his arthritis!” said a happy Armando.
Here at Pasado’s, we look beyond what might be considered “standard care.” We know that administering an old,
arthritic sheep large doses of pain medication isn’t the cure-all, and overmedicating can damage animals’ organ
systems. We are committed to providing the best care that we can for those animals who might otherwise fall through
the cracks. Join us in our mission to save these innocents who suffer in silence, but whose thanks speak volumes!
