Update:
Although Pasado's had hoped for a positive
outcome for Gracie and Phoebe, it was not to be.
They had suffered for far too long.
Board-certified veterinary medical specialists
believed that ultimately, letting them go might
be the kindest thing for them.
We are so grateful to the professionals at
Veterinary Specialty Center in Lynnwood, WA. We
have trusted them for years. Pasado's paid
approx. $2600 for a full diagnostic work-up on
both dogs. Ultrasound, radiographic thorax
examination, skin biopsies, and full laboratory
work-ups were performed. Rotted teeth had
invaded the bone of the sinus cavity in one;
mammary tumors were evident on both dogs; one to
the degree of wrapping itself around the chest.
We told Furry Tail Farm the news on Friday and
asked if we would be allowed to let them slip
into peace; they wanted the dogs returned, which
we honored. The animals were in pain. Pasado's
paid for pain medications to be sent home with
the dogs. We pray they will no longer suffer.
INVESTIGATION BEGINS
Angel Ray, Pasado's Safe Haven's cruelty
investigator, did what she always does: begin
the search for the origins of the suffering. Who
allowed this? She started by calling Kitsap
County Animal Rescue & Services to understand if
a case had been filed. She spoke with a very
responsive officer, "It was really great to
speak with someone who wanted to find the people
who did this as much as I did," Angel says.
Angel learned there had been no case number
assigned, which reflects the first call, so
Angel went "on record" to get the ball rolling.
She will be working in concert with authorities
to help in any way. Pasado's role is to augment
investigations, at no cost to the county.
Knowing Angel, she won't sleep until she can get
to the bottom of this case. Stay tuned to this
website for updates...
History:
It was a seemingly busy, but normal Wednesday afternoon at Pasado’s Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary.
That all changed when we became aware of six small Dachshunds in need of urgent medical care.
There origins continue to remain a mystery, but
help was needed, nonetheless.
As soon as we received the call for help, our entire team sprang into action. Our Cruelty Investigator,
Angel Ray, met with reporters at KOMO 4 (a CBS affiliate) and apprised them of our intent to get involved
with helping these very sick, abused, and neglected animals.
In the pre-dawn hours of Thursday, June 11th, after barely a few hours of sleep, Angel caught the
ferry from Seattle to Bainbridge Island. She was accompanied by Pasado’s Professional Photographer, Jim B.
They arrived at the animal rescue facility where the dogs
had been dropped off earlier in the week.

We decided to take two of the females who were most in need of immediate care. Miss
Phoebe and Miss Gracie were
lovingly transported in the air-conditioned Pasado’s Rescue Van.
“They know that we’re here to help,” said Angel
as she cuddled the two frightened females.
Phoebe warmed up immediately and desperately wanted to be held
and cuddled.
“Gracie’s big brown eyes look sad, but she's very receptive to love.” They just want reassurance
and they have sweet and loving personalities,” Angel explained.

Pasado's doesn't just rescue animals. If we
save an animal but fail to find the origins
of the neglect or cruelty, animals in the
future are likely to suffer. Angel makes
sure animals in pain get immediate help, and
then the hunt is on to find who caused the
suffering.
By 11:00 am, they arrived at the VCA Veterinary Specialty Center of Seattle, located in Lynnwood.
According to Polly
Peterson, DVM, DACVIM, both Gracie and
Phoebe have very serious mammary tumors which have a 50/50 chance of being malignant.
Both dogs will undergo extensive testing in order to determine which surgical procedures can be performed and when. They both
suffer from severe dental disease and are
missing teeth.

The younger Gracie has more serious health issues, as her tumors cover
both sides of her small body and are much deeper and harder to treat. She’s also suffering from knuckling on her right back leg
which could be due in part to a prior injury that was never treated.
When asked what caused these tumors, Dr. Peterson responded by saying, “This is due to the fact that they weren’t spayed before
two cycles.” It’s obvious that these poor dogs were used as breeders, purely for monetary gain by some cruel individuals.
According to Angel Ray, this is an "open and active investigation," and “people are being questioned.” For now, rest assured that
the staff at Pasado’s Safe Haven is on duty and will continue to do our best for our furry friends.
