It is when humans are at their worst that Pasado’s Safe Haven must be at
its best.
It is never easy to take on a tough case of animal abuse, but on June 19th, 2008, we took
a particularly difficult call.
Coronado Springs Apartment's resident Mary Ann
H. heard the screams of a beloved community
goose, named Goose E. Goose. She was his
caretaker, and to her horror, she witnessed him being held down, choked, and kicked. All of his wing feathers
were ripped out from the sockets on both of his wings. Who could do such a thing?
Mary Ann called the local authorities, who referred her to Pasado's Safe Haven. After we rescued him, he was taken to a local veterinary hospital where the
examining veterinarian called this an “extreme case of animal cruelty.”
To add insult to injury, Goose E. Goose had watched as his beloved mate of ten years was tortured
and decapitated just weeks before he was rescued by Pasado’s Safe Haven.
On April 7th 2009, Pasado's Safe Haven was called out again to the same location to rescue a new
female goose that had been dumped in the same pond. Knowing that the killers were still at large,
Pasado's Safe Haven with the help of a dedicated volunteer, Vicki G. went in and rescued the
helpless Goose. Vicki literally jumped into the large pond for the rescue.
At the sanctuary, Goose E.
Goose greeted our new rescued goose with joy, and
she was instantly dubbed “Mrs. Goose E. Goose.”
The joy of rescued animals is what keeps us going, and we’re pleased to say that this contented couple
will live out the remainder of their lives safe from harm.
Even though we’re ecstatic about this double rescue, fine fowl like geese and ducks are still victims
of a “gray area:” Domestic ducks and geese are not classified as companion animals by the shelters, and
not considered wild by wildlife rescue organizations. Animal shelters are not typically set up for
injured wild animals, especially waterfowl, and many will refuse to take them. In the spring, wildlife
rescue centers are overwhelmed with orphans, and often are unable to help.
We cannot forget the trauma Goose E. Goose suffered!
Pasado's Safe Haven has offered a $1000.00 REWARD for the information leading to the arrest,
prosecution, and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the torture of Goose E. Goose at
Coronado Springs Apartments. If you have any information on this crime, please
email Animal
Cruelty Investigator
Angel
Ray. All informants will remain anonymous.
Help us continue this great work by making a
donation today. It's thanks to you that
rescues like this are possible!
