Pasado's Story
Pasado Newsletter

Dr. Frey, above, our miracle worker, looks at this young girl's leg. The vet who called Pasado's tried to stabilize the leg, but it was impossible to save.

It started with a phone call - “Can you help a dog,” the woman asked? “She’s been hit by a car.”

The call wasn’t unusual to us. What was unusual was it was a veterinarian who was asking for help. Why couldn’t she help the dog, we wondered?

She continued. “The people who own the dog brought her to my clinic,” she said. “They explained that the dog was in heat, so they tied her to a trash can lid. At some point, she took off running.”

It turned out, she took the trash can lid, as well, and ran right into oncoming traffic. Her leg was so badly shattered, the veterinarian couldn’t even attempt to fix it. That’s why she called Pasado’s Safe Haven.

We were on our way in moments.

Why do even veterinarians call Pasado’s Safe Haven for help? Because we do what few offer: 24-hour rescue of dogs, cats, and farm animals.

As we made urgent calls to get this dog the help she needed, we also worked on gaining custody of the dog. Her owner’s answer to dealing with their dog "in heat" was to tie her up. And not very well at that. They also told the vet they couldn’t afford care for her. After saving her life, we simply didn’t want her to go back to a home where she could end up running into traffic again (let alone having unwanted litters). We successfully gained custody.

It turned out this dog’s leg was too far gone to save. “It’s one of the worst cases I’ve seen," our surgeon told us. The dog was taken into emergency surgery and after four hours in the operating room, her leg was removed. “It was just too far gone to save,” our vet told us. “She’d live in pain, with years of arthritis problems if we tried to save it.” She was a young dog and we hated to do this to her, but amputation would save her life.

(Left, John, one of our incredible volunteers, transported Stella back and forth to the vet following her amputation.)

Stella, as we named her, came back to Pasado’s Safe Haven's sanctuary to recover. She soon became the hit of the farm, begging for a pet from every volunteer who arrived.

And sure enough, one of them fell in love.

Lani, who comes every week to work with the A.A.R.F.F. dogs, couldn’t believe it when she met Stella. She stood almost frozen. “I have a niece who lost her arm in a horrible accident,” she told us. “We’ve gone through agony knowing how horrible this has been for her.”

It took her only moments to decide: “Stella,” she flatly said, “would be the best medicine of all for her.”

Erica, Lani’s niece (left), lost her right arm in a freak farm equipment accident when she was 4-years-old. As she grew into her teen years, making friends, going on dates, became sheer heartache for her. Stella, another adorable girl who lost an "arm", was just the friend she needed.

Within days, Lani arranged everything: she got her niece's parent's blessing and soon, Stella was in her forever home.

We know Stella will never be tied up outside to a trash can lid, or ever be allowed to run into traffic and hurt again. She's found her heaven, in the lap of a girl, just like her.
