The call came in at around 7:30a.m. "There's a pig running around on a highway! Can you come and help?" Just the kind of call we're used to.
We rushed to the scene and found out a pig, being transported with four other pigs to slaughter, had leaped from the truck into rush-hour traffic on a busy highway. A truck hit the pig, causing a multiple-car accident. The pig, injured and terrified, managed to get off the highway. Josh, left, one of Pasado's awesome volunteers, was there to help.
The driver of the truck fled the scene and police signed custody of the animal over to Pasado's Safe Haven. After trying to wrangle her for an hour, we successfully managed her into a truck. A group of people, observing from local banks and businesses, came out and gave our rescuers a standing ovation!
The pig came to Pasado's Safe Haven, where x-rays were taken and contusions and open wounds from falling from the truck (and being hit by another truck) were treated by a veterinarian. After only a few hours here, this pig who managed to escape slaughter, made herself right at home.

We named her Louise, and everyone fell in love with her. Well, almost everyone...

A man showed up at Pasado's gate that afternoon, demanding he get his pig back. We refused. "You can do this the easy way or the hard way," he told us. We chose the hard way and referred him to the police, where he faced charges of fleeing the scene of an accident, transporting an unsafe load, and transporting an animal in an unsafe manner.

We learned Louise was owned by the Sultan School District - she was part of a Future Farmer's of America (FFA) project where animals are raised for slaughter. While we have yet to make contact with the school district, Louise has become a celebrity - a national magazine has called about her story and local TV news stations sent their stories to the networks - Louise has now aired in all 50 states on ABC & NBC.
We hope the Sultan School District will view this story as a good public relations tool and support not sending Louise to slaughter. Something we will fight vigorously to keep from happening.
