Saving Lil'
Lambchop |
|

|
We were called by a woman who had
witnessed a petting farm where a pig was unable to stand and nurse her babies,
dead bunnies were left in a pen, and a dead sheep lay where this little
lamb, and many more lived. All the lambs had diarrhea and some, like
this one, weren't standing.
The woman was horrified. She picked up the little baby and walked out -
hoping no one would see. She took the lamb to a vet and called us.

Lambchop was too tiny to live in
the barns so she moved in with us, 5 dogs, 13 cats, and a chicken.
Daddy's Little Girl...Mark Steinway, co-founder of Pasado's,
became the light of Lambchop's eye. She'd only take a bottle from
him. |

|
Clyde, one of the sanctuary lifetime residents, took a particular liking to
Lambchop. She would go in and out of the house with all the dogs when they
went to the bathroom - and she still thinks she's a dog, to this
day. |

How can anyone eat
lamb? It simply amazes us that people can forget the living
creature behind their meal. After meeting Lambchop, and finding
out how any animal can be like a dog or cat if raised like one, we could
never see such a thing on a plate - as dinner.

DID YOU KNOW?
Lambs can tell the difference between
a photograph of a sheep and a photograph of a human. They can also separate
photographs of sheep from goats and some can even tell the difference
between the face of a ram and the face of a ewe.
A mother sheep and her lamb share a very close relationships.
Lambs can become very attached to people too. If a human hangs a piece
of his or her clothing outside, the lamb will run to it for safety if
scared.
Just like humans, sheep parents act to ensure that their offspring play with
others their own age. Parents threaten or attack older animals who attempt
to play with their youngsters!
Lambs learn which foods are preferable by observing their mothers. They retain
the knowledge for life, and have been shown to utilize it even after not
having encountered specific foods for years.
Sheep have been known to help blind sheep around by nudging them with their
shoulders.
Grazing sheep are good for wildlife because grazing sheep help other plants to grow that
deer and elk like to eat.
Sheep (like cows) can remember events for at least 3 years and will avoid people or
areas associated with unpleasant experiences.

Millions of
lambs are slaughtered in the United States every year. A pregnant ewe is usually slaughtered after she has produced
three to five lambs. She is killed without stunning. Instead, she is pinned to the
slaughterhouse floor by workers, her throat slashed and her head
twisted off. The carcass is then hoisted for skinning.
