History
As vacationers
attempted to enjoy a rental home near a popular lake, they sat down to
dinner on the patio, and proceeded to watch a dog tied by the neck to a
three-foot-long chain outside a ramshackle trailer, beaten relentlessly.
They were horrified. And scared. They called the local sheriff, who
claimed nothing could be done. Over the course of their "vacation"
weekend, they tried to decide what to do to help the poor dog. In the end,
they bargained with the man who beat him, and took possession of the dog. |
|

|
The next thing
they did was call Pasado's Safe Haven. They drove the dog over a mountain
pass and arrived with a frightened, bewildered animal. We used food to
bring him around - he was petrified any time we raised our hands or arms. |
 |
|

|
His savior, left,
was to credit. She's the one who got him out of the abusive home. But now
it was Pasado's turn to take over and press charges of animal cruelty. We
quickly had everyone e-mail the county prosecuting attorney and began to
build a case. To us, it's not enough just to rescue an animal - if we
don't make sure the abuser pays for his crimes, we know it'll happen
again. |
|

|
The first
order of business was taking photos of the dog's injuries. He had worn a
harness that was never made larger as the dog grew. The harness was nearly
embedded in his skin, leaving abrasions. We took Freckles, as he became
known, to the vet, and compiled the case for the prosecutor. |
|

|
The prosecutor
agreed to pursue the case and a myriad of good people packed the courtroom
to show the judge how important a conviction was to this dog. Freckles won
- the man was sentenced to a year in jail and was ordered not to own
animals for a period of 2 years (the longest period allowed in Washington
State). |
|

|
The best news
of all is Freckles was adopted by a great Pasado's Safe Haven volunteer
who already had two dogs. He gets to go to doggie day care every day, at a
lake (when his mom works) and run and play with a dozen dogs. We hear he
sleeps in his new mom's bed at night, along with his two new brothers. How
can any ending be happier! |
