When Deborah H. was called by residents of her mobile home park and told that a putrid odor was coming from one of the trailers, she had no idea what she'd witness when she entered: feces and garbage, fully one foot high on the floor. Cats ran everywhere - 35+ were suspected of living inside. "The water was left running inside the bathtub, which was over half-filled with cat feces," she stated later in an affidavit.

She started calling area shelters and, “All I got was a recorded message,” she said. Then she called Pasado's Safe Haven, which provides the only 24-hour rescue of dogs, cats, and farm animals in the Pacific Northwest.

Animal rescuers from Pasado's Safe Haven set-up an undercover 24-hour surveillance camera outside the house to prove the animals had been abandoned and no one was feeding them. This helped to prove that the cats weren't fed within the 36 hours allowed by Washington State law to starve animals. With the proof in hand, we gained legal access. We had to wear
respirators to be able to breathe - we could just imagine how horrid it had to be for those cats.

Many of the cats suffered respiratory problems and some were nearly feral because they had been allowed to breed, unchecked, and never received care or attention. Happily, after months of veterinary medical care, and plenty of love, they were all rehabilitated.

All of the cats, except one, survived, and were adopted into wonderful, loving homes. The man who owned the cats is no longer able to own animals and is being watched by Pasado’s Safe Haven.
