Pasado's Story
Pasado Newsletter

They first tied the dog, known in the neighborhood as a sweet, sad stray, to a tree. She waited patiently, watching them, as they loaded the arrow in a bow and then shot her. When they walked to her, she probably thought they would help her. Instead, they ripped the arrow out of her body and shot her again, and again, and again. Ten times. The dog suffered horribly until she died. When the young men were done with their thrill kill, they dumped the body of the dog in a creek.

The tree, left, where the dog died.

Loney, left, and Paulson - the cowards who admit killing the dog. One has a criminal history of child molestation. The other, assault. Big surprise.

News of the atrocity enraged animal lovers. Pasado’s Safe Haven organized "peaceful" protest outside the courtroom for every hearing. It was important to let the judge, potential jury, and media know how the community felt. We then launched an e-mail campaign asking the prosecuting attorney not to plea out the case - and to encourage maximum sentencing. It worked. The case went to trial. The two young men were charged with felony animal cruelty.

They thought they’d get away with murder but they couldn’t have been more wrong. They were convicted of First Degree Felony Animal Cruelty and led away in chains, below left. They were sentenced to nine months in jail, a $2000 fine, and mandated psychiatric treatment. None of which was enough, in our opinion. But they’ll think twice before hurting another animal. Thanks goes to all the people who were on our eAction Alert List and responded to our e-mails and calls to show up at the courthouse for the hearings and trial. And to the janitor of the elementary school, who was the eyewitness to the crime. He came forward and testified - a gutsy thing to do given the history of these two - assault, child molestation, and numerous other crimes.

Citizens Show Up - and Show Their Outrage - it works every time
When a man beat his dog to death with a golf club because it “misbehaved”, few people in the tiny West Coast town of Port Hadlock, WA had heard about the case. Pasado’s Safe Haven worked with area residents to develop a massive campaign to bring about a prosecution of the coward who did this. According to a local resident who first showed up at the courthouse for the first hearing, “I was the only one standing out in the rain with my husband and my sign”, recalls Cheryl H. .
But within a week’s time, our e-mail campaign to raise awareness, and get people out (see above)- and the hard work of local animal lovers like Cheryl, changed all that. By the next hearing, dozens showed up to peacefully protest in front of the courthouse - everyone from grandmothers to children voiced their outrage. The result? The case got great media coverage and the man was prosecuted  and convicted for felony animal cruelty.
