We thought we had heard it all. We had seen every kind of animal cruelty imaginable. And then we met Angel.

The kitten came to Pasado’s Safe Haven with massive rectal bleeding and trauma to her tail. Diagnosis: the kitten’s anus had been ruptured; her tail was “broken”, meaning permanent neurological damage had been done and amputation was necessary to avoid gangrene. Our veterinarians suspected the kitten had been penetrated by a large object, while her tail was held. They wrote detailed reports for the sheriff to review - it would make you cry to read them.

We offered a $1000 reward seeking who did this to this helpless kitten and plastered the neighborhood where Angel was found with posters. The reward worked. We acquired signed eyewitness statements indicating two 13-year-old boys had perpetrated the crime.

The Snohomish County Sheriff interviewed the two boys, who claimed they “didn’t mean” to hurt the kitten. The Sheriff issued a statement to the press stating that what our veterinarians called ”deliberate anal penetration” of the kitten, was only a “careless” act, and didn’t appear to be “intentional”. We were outraged. The Sheriff hadn’t met the kitten, hadn’t talked to our veterinarians, seen their medical reports, nor took into consideration the eyewitnesses to the crime. We publicly denounced the Sheriff’s actions in the press, and hope voters consider this case when the Sheriff comes up for re-election.

Meantime, Angel recovered so well. She was adopted to the most wonderful woman anyone could ever want as a "mom". Angel shares her mom with four other pampered cats, and, we're sure, has forgotten and forgiven.
