The Lamar Dickson Equestrian Center outside Baton Rouge, Louisiana had been designated as the intake point for all animals coming out of the "hot zone". The "big boys" ran Lamar - HSUS, AHA. Small groups and individuals were in the field rescuing and bringing in animals. When PasadoRescuers arrived, there were already hundreds of animals there. People like Claudia, left, worked tirelessly in the sweltering heat.   
Connie, a long-time Pasado volunteer who came with us, slept 3 hours a night in her car. She rarely ate or showered. Her goal was to bring as much comfort to the lost souls who found themselves at Lamar Dickson.  

 
Dr. Brad, and the crew from Redmond Veterinary Clinic, was the first vet team to join PasadoRescue. They were unbelievable. They jumped right in and started healing. The animals were so lucky to have these selfless people on their side.  
Ken Warman, who would rescue for weeks, return home for a rest, and return to New Orleans again, worked night after night without enough food or sleep. He had such a gentle touch with the animals.  

 
We could have stayed at Lamar Dickson helping but animals were inside homes, dying, and there weren't enough rescue crews saving them.

While some PasadoRescuers stayed behind at Lamar Dickson (Connie would be there for weeks), most took the cargo vans and went into the hot zone. After a few days of rescuing, and returning to Lamar Dickson to drop off the animals, the doors shut. PasadoRescuers, and dozens of other small rescue groups and individuals were turned away.

 
It was late at night - people had been out saving animals all day, and when they arrived at Lamar, armed guards told them they couldn't enter. It was a nightmare. But the next morning, PasadoRescuers were back in the trenches, facing toxic flood waters, in a race to save as many animals as they could...Next
