When you decided to click on this page, you already had in your heart what we all share here at Pasado's Safe Haven - a passion to help the animals and an inquisitive mind that makes you ask, "What would it be like to work around those animals every day? Live with them (well, almost!)" Right?

2007 Winter Intern
All the way from Wisconsin, Becky meets and works with the animals she chose not to eat years ago...

2006 Summer Intern
Claire, from Houma, Louisiana. We met her when we were rescuing in the aftermath of Katrina. A pre-vet student, Claire wanted to learn "hands-on" about the animals. Did she ever! Read about her summer here, and where she is now.
2005 Fall Intern

Merilee
, (bottom row, far right) started her 2005 Fall Pasado Internship by meeting us at the airport and boarding a plane bound for New Orleans. She was with PasadoRescuers for two months while they lived and breathed Hurricane Katrina rescue. The photo, left, was taken at the airport, before they left Seattle. That was the last time she's be as clean for 60 days - but it was a life-changing experience she'll never forget.

Once in Louisiana, Merilee went to work. Left, she's coordinating rescue with local law enforcement at Lamar Dickson, where the first of the rescued Katrina animals came in. It was 95+ degree everyday. She worked 20 hour days. But she was doing work that would forever save lives.

Merilee went out, in-the-field, daily on rescues. When you intern with Pasado's Safe Haven, you're apt to face the "extremes" - moments that will be a part of your heart and mind forever. Many of them happy, many of them sad beyond words. You must be able to withstand a range of emotions and continue to work.

Merilee, bottom row, second from right stops for a newspaper photographer to capture a moment.

The photo left was taken with a cell phone camera (hence the poor quality). It captures the ride home, at the end of a long day of Katrina rescue in the burning sun. Merilee enjoys the company of a rescued puppy, and of Larry, Pasado's Humane Investigator.
Another cell phone photo, left. Merilee helps a dog who had just given birth. She was found in a New Orleans house, chained, only feet from food and water that she could never get to. She was too weak to walk.

This is the mama, with her pups. Merilee took care of them, and so many more.

Only a few weeks into assisting with Katrina rescue, Merilee's boyfriend, Grant, flew in to help, too. He was a godsend. They were tireless workers, who never complained.

Merilee and Grant - in the end, they helped PasadoRescuers save nearly 1200 dogs, cats, chickens, parrots, gerbils, hamsters, snakes, and rats from the nation's worst disaster. We will be forever grateful to them, and they will never forget how they spent their PasadoInternship.
