Claire -
Pasado's 2006 Summer Intern
We fielded many
applications in the summer of 2006 from potential interns from across
the U.S. and Canada. It was probably the high-profile rescue Pasado's
Safe Haven did in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina that brought so
many university students and others to our website. They wanted to learn
how they could help, too.
So it was tough
deciding on who would be "the" 2006 Pasado's Summer Intern. And Claire,
stood out, no doubt. |

Claire's home town is
Houma, Louisiana. That's where PasadoRescue set-up a vast triage camp on
a 100-acre horse farm. There, we rescued 1200 animals after Katrina.
Claire is a university
student in Baton Rouge and wants to work with animals "in some way". She
hasn't decided yet but we think after working at Pasado's, her direction
is a bit more firm. |

Claire worked with
every animal imaginable here. Her favorite and most surprising?
Chickens. "They're so personable. The hen house is my favorite place to
work. I had no idea they had so much personality," she says. |
 |
In her 3+ months
on-site as Pasado's sanctuary, Claire got to know cows, turkeys, llamas,
pigs, horses, goats, sheep, and of course dogs and cats. She lived with
many of the senior A.A.R.F.F. animals and in fact, adopted one of them.

(We flew Eva, left,
down to Claire in New Orleans once the weather cooled!) |

Claire arrived at
Pasado's a meat-eater and left a vegan. We don't require that, by any
means; that journey must be left up to the individual.
But our rescued animals
are the best teachers. And they did a great job of showing Claire just
how much all animals are "companion animals".
Claire's going-away
party was sad. We came to love this girl (she made us the most awesome
vegan New Orleans gumbo and jambalaya at her party and even brought
beads and New Orleans CD's to play). She's back at school now, and we
hope one day, will return to Pasado's. We miss her dearly. |
