From Hell to Hog Heaven!

Three severely neglected pigs arrive at their safe new home at Pasado's!

There were squeals of joy today from the humans and three special little pigs who arrived to their new home at the Pasado's sanctuary!  They had just taken the joy ride of their life as they crossed over the mountains from Wenatchee, WA where they had experienced horrors in their young lives that no animal should ever have to.

Douglas County Animal Control received the neglect complaint and upon investigation, they found the pigs living in “absolutely mortifying” conditions.  “The officers were shocked by what they saw,” said Jody White, Director of Field Operations and Sergeant for Animal Control.  Caked in chin deep mud and feces, one of the pigs had propped her head up on her deceased pen mate- an act that had kept her from suffocating in the filth.  Surrounded by dead pigs, these guys were lucky to be found still alive.

Jody said they clapped their hands and yelled but the pigs who were huddled up together in the filth would not look at them or respond in any way.  "They did not associate humans with care, food or anything."  When they turned on the hose, one of the pigs began to get so frantic to drink water that he went into convulsions.  The vet that was there to assess the situation said that they needed to be removed from the hell they were living in immediately.

What could have easily happened next was that the pigs could have been sent to slaughter and then ended up on someone's dinner plate.  But what the pigs didn't know is that they had just met their true hero and the person who would forever change their lives.  Jody said that the only "ham" they would ever be was when they were acting silly and wiggling their way into to everyone's hearts!

She was absolutely determined that the suffering would end for these guys.  It was time for them to relax - enjoy life and feel love.  So, where would they be able to live high on the hog and happily ever after?  Pasado's Sanctuary!   She asked us and we agreed.  Louise and Kevin Bacon snorted their approvals!

Their hero, Jody, their foster mom, Lisa and their chauffer, Todd

So, it was decided.  A team of three special humans would escort the three special pigs over the mountains to hog heaven at Pasado's.
It was truly a touching moment as the truck pulled up to the barn. Having friends here like Kevin Bacon and Louise, we know just how much personality pigs have.  They are very much like your own pets- and interact with people in very similar ways like cats and dogs do. To think that these guys suffered so tremendously and would not have ever had the chance to feel life's necessities or love was unbearable.

The trailer door opened and slowly and cautiously the pigs gently walked out and inspected their new rooting grounds.  There was a sparkle in their eyes when they saw their outdoor area.  They began to munch on the green grass... and munched more... and more!  "Now that's the sound of happy pigs!" Jody exclaimed.

Safe at last.  Blossom gazes out at her new Hog Heaven!

Pigs are so very clever.  It seems that they have already figured out that they are safe and loved here. I got a big sloppy piggy kiss from a curious snout as I was photographing them.  That was an amazing gesture considering their past. They have been very busy rooting around, laying in the warm sunlight and visiting with the volunteers and Pasado's staff.
