Soul mates & sisters, Meenie & Moe

Mourning Moe
by Jenny M, Farm Animal Manager

A couple of months ago we informed our readers that Moe, one of our pygmy goats was diagnosed with Neoplasia cancer. (Read her story)  She was given only a few weeks to live.  We are saddened to say that Moe peacefully passed away this week.   She didn't seem to want to go and stayed with us an extra month.

She was given so much love in her remaining time.  She lived and was supported day in and day out by Meenie, her soul mate and sister.

Zorro was even there for the two of them during this time and is giving lots of love to Meenie.  Since his escape from the farm where he was being held until he was to end up as someone's dinner, Zorro has spent his time relaxing and having fun with Meenie and Moe.  He has learned to trust people for the first time.  No doubt he had observed Meenie and Moe getting treats and hugs and saw that not all humans are horrible.  His once scared and untrusting expressions have changed to ones of curiosity.

Many of us have been mourning Moe’s passing… but no one more than Meenie.  She has been extra cuddly the last few days; nuzzling her head in my arms; I feel her pain.  Time does heal but memories are never forgotten; I am certain this happens with animals as well.

Emotions in animals are hard to define because we can’t verbally socialize with them, but just like people, they share emotions and empathy.  It is easy to bond with animals because they are so similar to ours, they bond with us too.  With a conscience, it is impossible not to love animals; they have feelings.  We are all aware of these feelings when we interact with them.  Learning about animal emotions also helps us learn more about ourselves.

A friend lent me a wonderful book full of Animal Blessings and I thought this one to be fitting:

May we develop kinship with all living things.

Allow us to reunite with all our relations, the animals.

Let us hear the call of the earth and the beckoning song of nature, and answer with our hearts.

Make us aware of our similarities, our sameness.

Help us recognize each unique thread of the cosmos,

And so recognize our connection to each other.

Henceforth, may we remember to honor and cherish Every living thing.

Reflecting on Moe's life brings us many smiles.  We are so grateful to have known her.  She had the best life here.   At Pasado's, she got to feel true love from the many visitors, volunteers and staff members.  She also got to live life with her beloved sisters which she truly enjoyed.  And we made sure she was as comfortable as she could be in her final days.

YOU helped Moe have a wonderful life here at the Pasado's sanctuary.  You decided her fate by supporting us.  The alternate for her could have been such a sad story.

Can you make a donation today so that we can forever change more animals lives?  Because of you, we can be there when an animal has no hope at all.  Thanks for your continued support!
