Oliver
This little piggy…
has a special friend

by Jenny M, Farm Animal Manager

There are people in our lives that could make the whole world smile with their presence; a person whose compassion for life and all living beings is nothing less than influential and inspiring.  I believe knowing animals can create this euphoric feeling that can be therapeutic and put a positive spin on the way we view life.  I am privileged to see volunteers bond with so many different animals at Pasado’s, whether it be a chicken, a donkey, a cow or in this case, a pig named Oliver.

Donna G., a long time volunteer, has an incredible relationship with our sweet Oliver.  She started out as a Kitty City volunteer and then soon started closing up the farm on Tuesday nights as well, driving all the way from Seattle twice a week.  Like many volunteers, Donna hadn’t been around too many farm animals in her life, but it didn’t take long before it was obvious she was sprung.  I began to get emails from her every night that she would close like this one….

Pasado's Volunteer, Donna G. and
her dear friend  Oliver
"…Last night was pure heaven to me.  Is that bizarre or what? Mr. Oliver and I had a nice chat.  I sat in the straw with him and hand feed him strawberries and apricots.  He was so sweet and closed his little eyes as I rubbed behind his ears."
In no time, it was clear that she was falling in love with Oliver.   Her words are inspiring and I know her love for this animal could captivate the world.

" …I think of him as the son I never had.  He is so sweet.  I swear he smiles at me; I can see mischief, happiness, frustration when it occurs in his eyes and expression.

He's such a sweet boy…"

Donna attends all of Oliver’s weekly acupuncture treatments.  Read more here.  She is always there for him. It is the best feeling in the world to see a human bond with an animal. Donna has such a beautiful, caring soul and her love for creatures is incredible thing to see.

"…I wanted to let you know that Oliver was his little piggy self last night.  He was full of mischief and dare I say childlike giddiness.  He followed me into the barn front door!  Walked around with me while I put the goats to bed. .  And, of course, you and I both know his chicken friend, Elizabeth - she is such a good friend to Oliver…"

We are blessed to have so many wonderful people like this who are a part of Pasado’s Safe Haven. After having a rescued chicken nest on your lap, nuzzling up to a gentle cow or rubbing a grateful pig's belly, many volunteers are forever changed.  At Pasado’s Safe Haven, you'll have the rare opportunity to meet and learn about cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, and other farm animals.  Who knows, you may even find your animal soul mate like Donna did.  Want more info on volunteering?  Click here!
