Pet Over Population Breeds Euthanasia

More than $2 billion dollars are spent annually by local governments in sheltering and ultimately destroying 8-10 million adoptable dogs and cats.

An estimated 6 to 8 million dogs and cats are euthanized in shelters each year.

Purebreds account for more than 30% of animals in shelters.
Pet over population is a devastating epidemic that plagues communities around the world.

When you look at the animals that are in the shelters, you see completely adoptable, sweet, good natured pets. The first question is, “Why”? Why are these wonderful animals getting dropped off, dumped and abused?

When I used to work in the receiving room of an animal welfare organization, I can tell you that you hear every story imaginable. “He has separation anxiety”, “She growled at my kids”, “He just needs too much time”, or “We are going on vacation”  - all very common on a daily basis. These animals are coming from homes where they have lived for years.

Owner ignorance populates shelters

The main reasons dogs are surrendered is that owners fail to obedience train or have unrealistic expectations of their pet; especially those that do not visit a veterinarian regularly.

Teaching the human animals how to understand their non-human family members is one of the most successful ways to help create a forever home.

The Numbers Tell the Story

The Humane Society of St. Joesph in Mishawaka, Indiana did a study on owner surrenders. The team compiled separate information for dogs and cats; they interviewed 380 people who surrendered their dogs for adoption and 905 owners who kept their animals. The control group was chosen from a random sample of dog-owning St. Joseph County residents. The study took into account animals surrendered, the age of the dogs dropped off, how the animals were acquired, where they were acquired and why they were surrendered. Behavior problems occurring daily that contributed to surrender were: barking: 41 percent, chewing: 24 percent, hyperactivity: 45 percent, housetraining accidents: 21 percent, aggression to other pets: less than eight percent and aggression to people: less than nine percent.

Arden has helped millions of pets and people live happier, healthier, fuller lives. Recently on her, “Unleashed for a Pet-Friendly America” tour, Arden visited The Elliot Bay Book Company in Seattle. Elliot Bay invited Pasado’s to be part of this important event.  One of our wonderful senior dogs, Bear, tagged along for the ride and was the hit of the event! Elliot Bay is generously donating a percentage of these book sales to Pasado’s.
