Pasado's Story

The first words out of her mouth as a toddler weren’t “Mommy” or “Daddy.” They were “Dog dog!” With that information it’s no surprise to learn that Danielle L., Pasado’s summer intern, has wanted to have her own animal sanctuary since she was five years old. It seemed that all roads led to Pasado’s, where she now finds herself working with our wonderful critters five days a week.

Danielle enjoyed a somewhat unconventional upbringing with five or six other families and their children on 115 beautiful acres in Oregon. All of the families were involved in 4-H and raising their own sheep from lambs, which the children later sold at auctions. The auction houses would then donate the sheep back to the families, and the families would slaughter and eat the sheep they had raised. Not little Danielle. She refused to participate in 4-H, and she refused to eat her friends. She was lucky to have parents who respected her decision and allowed her to keep her sheep as pets.

At some point Danielle’s parents became disenchanted with the communal life and moved to more conventional digs in the city. Danielle recalls the day she stopped eating meat at the age of 15. She and a friend had stopped at McDonald’s for lunch. Her friend held up her burger and said, “Mmmmmmmm, cow!” The connection became instantly clear to Danielle, and the idea of eating a cow was horrible, in the same way that she could not eat her sheep. She became a vegetarian that day and has not wavered since.
When she was 16, Danielle set up a booth at her community college and handed out flyers and information from various animal rights organizations to spread awareness about animal abuses. When she was 18 she lost her apartment and chose temporary homelessness over giving up her two dogs, Inuki and Jayke. They are all happily settled now, and are even more devoted to each other as a result of their shared experience.

Danielle’s background and life experience serve her well at Pasado’s, as no day is alike here and we have to be ready for anything. Emergencies arise and priorities can shift quickly, but Danielle has shown that she has what it takes. She’s not afraid of the mud and muck and she knows this is no place for designer jeans or sissies! It’s hard work, but rewarding for those who love animals. We’re very fortunate to have such a dedicated member on our team, and our animals are especially appreciative! Please join us in welcoming Danielle.
