We're building a miracle, and your donations are matched!
(Up to $60,000!)

When the flood waters rose during Katrina and Pasado’s Safe Haven needed to bring back 60 dogs at the end of our rescue mission, we simply didn’t have the space. We depended on local kennels and wonderful people to open their doors. The problem? We couldn’t provide the veterinary care and daily medical care in a consistent manner with animals placed all over the county.
|
|
The dream began...
We got everyone together - staff, volunteers, supporters and asked "What do we need to answer the need for any kind of
rescue...puppy mill, natural disaster, man-made disaster, for the sick and diseased animals, large and small, and for the senior dogs and cats?
And the answer slowly came together. |
Ground-breaking!
Above, everyone
who’ll be helped, rehabbed, or made
healthy again grabs a shovel (or paw)
to dig in and begin this amazing
miracle for Pasado’s Safe Haven!
|
|
Miracles Take Time....(and money!)
We won't have
all of this right away, mind you. We wish we could! We're starting with
a shell - we call it a "cow barn" because that's about what it is -
walls, a roof, and a floor. But over time, and with your generous gifts,
we'll slowly create what will be a miracle - for animals. It may take
years, but we've learned the value of patience!
The building will include...
Dog kennels:
Convertible indoor/outdoor kennels that can be separated down from 12'
square to 4' wide (in case we have a lot of dogs come in from rescue). They'll be separated to assure disease cannot be passed among them.
Aquatherapy: Our senior dogs need aqua therapy all the time. And although we've got the nicest people at
Cottage Spaw who donate services to our seniors rescued from shelter euthanasia, our dogs need the therapy more often. And transporting them is tough on them. Having a room here,
on-site with an aqua therapy tank, is the answer.
|
 |
Veterinary and Grooming rooms: When our old dogs & cats come in from rescue, or from shelters, frankly, most are a mess. They need teeth pulled, tumors removed, you name it. And they need grooming. Many are matted, covered in fleas and other parasites. Thanks to
Scrub-A-Pup, a local company
owneed by people with hearts of gold, we can assure grooming for the oldies any time. But it would be easier on the dogs and cats if we could help them here, at Pasado's sanctuary, without making them load up in a car or van.
There will be stalls for horses, cows, sheep, goats and other large animals. Pasado's Safe Haven is one of the few sanctuaries in the nation
that rescues and rehabilitates large animals from factory farming or from abuse and neglect suffered at the hands of individuals. Our new facility will feature stalls with turn-outs
that will keep animals separated to assure no disease is passed between them while rehabilitating. The turn-outs will open into separate pasture areas. It's a dream-come-true for these animals.

Large animals, in need of
lifting when they cannot walk,
will be helped.

|
|
Tommy, above, was just a
calf when teen boys used a herd of cattle as shooting practice, in the
middle of the night. Tommy's mom was shot through the eyes. Four cows
were killed. Only a few weeks old, Tommy was shot multiple times in the
legs and hip. Pasado's Safe Haven offered a $3000 reward for tips - and
it worked. The teens were arrested and served a year in jail. (The
longest sentence possible at the time.) |
| A large beam, that will cost thousands of dollars, will be installed in one of the stalls for animals who need to be hoisted up and off their legs. Large animals who cannot stand cannot recover; their digestive systems fail if they do not move and walk. "Slinging" them is the only answer. And when a horse or cow weighs 1200-1800 lbs, it takes one
mighty beam to hold them up and allow them to stand.
Right, Tommy had surgery
and used a harness built just for him. Pasado's Medical Facility will
have a similar rehab environment built in one of the stalls to serve
other cows, horses, llamas, and heavy animals needing help to stand and
walk. The harness can be lowered, allowing the animal to sleep and eat,
and then lifted to help with circulation and with digestion.

Below,
after Tomm'ys leg mended, he was fitted with the first proethetic leg
ever built for a cow in the the entire world. We want to be able to give
life to other animals who this kind of care.

Disaster Relief Animal Aid Storage: This may not sound "warm and
fuzzy" or critical but here is why it's so vital: when we were through
rescuing in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, we hired a semi-trailer
company to transport everything we collected from your wonderful
donations: industrial sized, 4' high fans to cool a large triage barn,
hundreds of temporary kennels and cages, boots and waders for water
rescue, the list goes on and on. Right now we have donated storage
housing our disaster relief animal aid items. And it's packed, to the
ceiling. It overflows into another storage unit. Last Fall, Barbara K.,
left (christening!) donated a dream: a brand new swift water rescue
boat, motor, and trailer. It sits next to a barn now and should be kept
inside to keep it in tip-top condition, and ready to role as soon as the
need arises. |
| Once our storage area in the new building is complete, we can organize all of our disaster relief animal aid needs so when flood waters rise, anywhere in the country, or
earthquake, wild fires, or any other natural disaster strikes, we'll be ready to roll.
The name - the legacy
Sandra, Pasado's Safe Haven's extraordinary donor from Austin, Texas, has made a great deal of this building possible. She wants no credit. Her only wish is that a plaque hang in the entrance that proudly says
"Pasado's Safe Haven's Medical Facility
In memory of Pasado". It makes us want to weep thinking what will rise in his memory - and the torture he had to endure to make greatness for other animals, come true.
Jan and Tom, are not unlike Sandra. They made an astounding gift in honor of Fannie M. Royal, a woman who they hold dear to their hearts. The dog kennel area will be named in her memory. Again, they are people who want no credit.
Others paid for a single dog or cat kennel, to name for their beloved pet, or one who has passed on.
But there is so much more we need to complete this dream. |
The Wish List! -
$1.00 for $1.00 MATCH UP TO $60,000!
Sandra, our Texas angel, has decided
to put the pedal to the metal. She’s
offering a matching gift program,
dollar-for-dollar up to $60,000 to
complete the building. We need to
build the aqua therapy room for the
old dogs with arthritis, the grooming
room for when they arrive matted and
full of fleas. And the veterinary
clinic, where those in need can be
treated with the care they deserve.
WHY OUR RESCUE BUILDING IS NEEDED
You have read about dogs like Tulip on
our website. She was rescued from an
Indian reservation where she’d spent
years outside in the cold of winter
and sweltering heat of summer with no
shelter. She was skin and bone when
she came in. She was covered in an
unknown skin condition, caused by
long-term, severe neglect. Look into
her eyes - she is one of many who need
this rescue building!
Today, she is beautiful! Full of
health. She went from 28 pounds to 60
already. But if we need room for a lot
of "Tulips", who come in from
puppy mills or disaster relief, we are
not ready. And that why we need your
help.
