Wasted Life
by Kim K, Pasado's Safe Haven's Humane Investigator

After struggling to stay alive, Conan, a 150-pound mastiff, died this week due to internal bleeding in his lungs.  He had been shot by an arrow in the chest.

The arrow just missed Conan’s lungs and heart.  Conan was taken to VCA, Veterinary Specialty Center of Seattle. There, he underwent emergency surgery and was expected to survive.

"This was an intentionally cruel act toward our dog. Its horrible.” said O’Hara, Conan’s owner. Conan made it through surgery, but died Thursday morning.

The arrows that were shot at Conan had to have been shot over a six foot fence. "They came at a downward angle and to get it in the alley area, you had to have a vantage point of standing on top of something,” said O’Hara. O’Hara and his wife, have a female mastiff also.  Jezebel was not injured, but they are worried to let their dog or their two young children out in their own back yard.

"I feel like I want to get some closed-circuit TV cameras or something," O'Hara said Wednesday.

Seattle Animal Control has several people investigating this case.  The shelter is taking the lead on an investigation of the shooting while coordinating with the Seattle Police Department.

Officials are warning Wallingford residents to keep an eye on their pets.

Conan did not survive the brutal attack in his own yard
Pasado’s Safe Haven believes that your pets are part of your family.  We strongly encourage your pets to be with you, supervised by you, or in the safety of your house when you are not home.  In the past few months alone, we have dealt with cases involving dogs and cats stolen from yards; killed or abused, dogs poisoned in parks, and multiple dog shootings.  There is one thing that most of these crimes have in common; they could have been prevented if these animals were not outside unattended.

Because dogs are pack animals, they instinctively want to be with their pack at all times.  We become that pack as the family unit that the dog knows.  It is not only unsafe to leave your dog outside, but also emotionally and physically hard on them.

Animal Control is trying to find the person responsible.   The help of the community is essential in helping to find the barbaric person or people guilty of this unthinkable crime.  Conan had been a family pet for seven years and his family said that he was just a big loveable dog.  O'Hara said he has never had any complaints from neighbors, even though Conan liked to bark and sometimes escaped from the yard.
He is handing out flyers to make neighbors aware.

The Humane Society of the United States and the Seattle Animal Shelter are each offering a $2,500 reward for information resulting in the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for Conan's death.

Anyone with information in this case is asked to contact Seattle Animal Control.  If you have information you are asked to call (206)386-4288.

Ann Graves, Seattle Animal Shelter Enforcement Supervisor, commented,” This is also concerning because studies have shown that someone who can commit this level of violence against an animal may be capable of violence against people. Someone knows who did this and we must find whoever is responsible."

If caught and convicted, Animal cruelty charges could lead to $5,000 in fines and a year in jail.
