Placing A Stray Animal
or "I know of an animal who is not being cared for properly":
Pasado's Safe Haven,
like other shelters, is contacted multiple times every day to take
strays or animals who need placement. You are probably a person who
saves animals and animals who need help find their way to you!
To give you a brief background, our mission at Pasado's, from the
beginning, was to "fill the voids" left unanswered by other shelters".
There were, and are, plenty or shelters that take strays. But none do
rescue, investigations, aggressive legislation, care for farm animals -
or old dogs and cats. Even "no kill" shelters euthanize old dogs and
cats because they fall within their "unadoptable" definition. Or, they
linger so long in a kennel or cage that they go "kennel crazy" and need
to be euthanized.
A.A.R.F.F. is to take
old dogs & cats from kill shelters only - because they have no other
answer besides death ahead of them. (Our only exception may be elderly
animals who live caged, forever, in so-called 'no kill' shelters,
because they're rarely, if ever, adopted).
It breaks our hearts to say "no" to any animal, but at least the ones we
hear about through such soft-hearted people as yourself, have a chance
at life.
What we can do
is offer low-cost spay/neuter, vaccination de-flea or de-worming to your
stray animal (if in Washington State). The
Spay Station exists to
help stop pet over-population. So let us know if we can help there - it
would save you hundreds of dollars - our pleasure. (It will be free if
you quality for low-income status.)
If an animal is not cared for properly
Many animals who are not cared for the way you or we would care for an
animal, exist in the world. Their level of care may quality for
investigation into animal cruelty or neglect. If the case is that
severe, click here.
If the animals you are
seeking help with does not qualify for such action, then we recommend
the following:
-If this is a neighbor,
friend, or relative, never be confrontational. We find "making friends"
with the person works best.
-Tell them how much you love their dog or cat. Be upbeat. Not
condecending.
-If it's a dog that is kept outside, ask nicely if there is a way the
animal can come indoors (sometimes it's simply a matter of fleas. Then
offer to give the dog a gift of flea medication! That may solve the
problem.
-If they claim they don't want the dog or cat inside for other reasons,
offer to buy the pet a new dog/cat house and bed. A longer cable (if on
a short chain). You can do a lot to bring comfort to the animal.
It's not against the
law to keep animals outdoors, on chains. Nor is it against the law to
never give your outdoor animal attention. It IS against the law not to
provide shelter, food, and water or veterinary medical care. Once again,
if this situation rises to the occasion of criminal neglect or abuse,

Lastly, we encourage
people, once a friendly attempt has been made to communicate with a pet
owner who appears not to take much interest in their pet, to ask nicely
if YOU can have them. Many times people will be glad to "unload" the pet
they don't want anyway. But then you must be willing to either keep and
care for this animal or go through the steps to find it a good home
yourself. Don't burden already over-burdened shelters. Click

animal in a great home. |
