Pasado's Story
Pasado Newsletter

The barns were opened. The dogs finally quiet after eating breakfast. Besides the cackling of one, lone hen who was making her daily egg in the chicken barn, a late morning calm had fallen on the sanctuary.

Until the roar of an enormous diesel engine broke through the front gate.

It was the PAW-spice arriving. Something we had prayed for for years. Pulled up from California on a big rig, it made its way slowly, crunching over the gravel roads of the farm, to its final destination in A.A.R.F.F

The barking started all over again.

Pasado's PAW-spice, for the oldest-of-the-old, was made possible by two, enormous hearts: They own and operate the largest real estate firm in the Pacific Northwest, and they adore animals, And that's why Roz & John, of Windermere Real Estate, decided to provide what our senior animals have always needed.

When senior dogs and cats come to Pasado's, they live in wonderful, free-ranging cabins, where they can enjoy the outdoors, any time, safely. If it's cold and rainy, they lounge with the other animals, comfortable and warm indoors. But when they reach a time in their lives, as many of them do, when they need one-on-one care - how they would be cared for in someone's home - they find their way to "Sid & Sheba's House" - the Pasado's PAWspice.

Named for Roz & John's beloved dog and cat (left), Sid and...

Sheba (left).

Claire, our Sanctuary Director lives with the dogs and cats who are in the final days or months of their lives.

When we recently told you about the passing of Betty, an old girl who we saved from shelter euthanasia, this is where she died.

The senior dogs who we rescue are full of surprises. Oftentimes that white muzzled ten-year old with her stiff joints and bad teeth doesn’t need much more than a little arthritis medicine and the loving encouragement of volunteers to start acting like a puppy again. However, not every senior dog adjusts so easily.

Some are simply too old, others too depressed from the trauma of being discarded at a shelter. Dogs like these cannot cope with the crowds in Dog Towne. They require extra one-on-one attention. And that's where Sid and Sheba’s House comes in.

Right now, Claire lives with Meg and two cats who need her.

When Meg arrived at Pasado’s Safe Haven, she was too depressed to do much more than lay on her bed. She had minimal interest in food and was indifferent to the attention of volunteers. Later we discovered that in addition to being deaf and very arthritic, she also suffered from epilepsy. Meg was placed on medication for her seizures and moved into Sid and Sheba’s House so that she would never have to be alone. With this special attention she has blossomed into a new dog. She has a jump in her step now and if you turn your head, she will be running down the road! Meg will be going to her new forever home soon, but there will never be a shortage of old dogs needing special care.

Joe, left, is another "Sid & Sheba's" resident. He has an unusual infectious herpes virus that makes him sneeze up a storm (and could possibly infect other cats). We call him Snotty Joe. Which leads us to the issue that Claire "enjoys" a life of a LOT of cleaning up. Old or ill animals, are not easy to care for. But she never complains.

You may think that a PAWspice is a sad place. But it is not. When we walk by, on the way to visit the younger (younger = 10, 12, 16 years of age!) dogs and cats, we see Meg, sleeping in the shade outside Sid & Sheba's House. So content. It would be a wonderful way for any of us to spend our remaining time on this earth.

And of course, best of all, these animals get to sleep with Claire, in her bed. And share all the love and care they deserved their entire lives. We hope, as they pass through Pasado's, and on to the Rainbow Bridge, they leave us in peace, and knowing they touched our hearts so deeply.

Please help us continue the work of rescuing animals few shelters take in - the old, the infirm, those with little hope. Pasado's Safe Haven is rated a 4-Star Charity - the very highest. We commit to using every dollar you donate wisely, and frugally.
