Bessie the cow is a “spent milker” who now spends her days romping in our rolling fields and playing with her water trough. Bessie’s antics are a riot, but her past is nothing to smile about. Milk cows like Bessie are kept in a constant state of pregnancy and then sent to slaughter when they’re “spent” and unable to provide up to 100 lbs of milk a day. We saw the value of Bessie’s life, though: we know that she was worth more than she could produce…
