SUMMARY:Public Tour FAQs
DESCRIPTION:People always ask us: Why didn't I receive an email with my directions and confirmation after I registered? Our tours are quarterly. This is a long time between tours, and we often have over 100 people who register. That is a lot of paperwork and a lot of email correspondence. To limit our staff time (which equals your donor dollars), we have streamlined this system. You will receive notification that you have been registered after you hit "submit" on the registration form. On the Thursday prior to the tour, you will receive an email from with your directions, instructions, and waivers so you can prepare for the tour. If you have questions at any time, please email us. Can we bring treats or gifts for the animals? Our rescued animals love it when you bring them gifts! Most of our farm animals can be fed along the tour, so feel free to bring some produce, leafy greens are best, already cut up and ready to feed. Just ask your tour guide prior to feeding, as many of our animals have special diets, and may not be allowed to eat everything on the menu! We always need cat litter, dog food, cat food, and produce. Almost all of the animals can eat leafy greens like lettuce in all its forms, spinach, and most love celery. Some other items that would be welcome are: seedless grapes, blueberries, strawberries, bananas and other seasonal (NO PITS) fruits (no citrus), frozen corn (birds and goats LOVE corn!), unsalted peanuts or air popped popcorn - no salt or butter (for pigs) and of course our horses LOVE carrots and eat a ton of them, and apples as well. Please make sure to remove all labels from the the fruit. Due to the dangers involved, Pasado’s does not use rawhide or other items of this nature. All natural jerkies, or dehydrated dog or cat treats are best, as are small training treats. We also accept other types of donations including dog beds, cat beds, collars, leashes, toys, etc. We love old laundry like sheets, towels and blankets, as we are always having to throw items like this out due to the occasional BIG potty accidents. Flashlights, batteries of all sizes, office supplies, toilet paper, paper towels, bleach, hand sanitizer, poop bags (old grocery sacks are fine) - the list goes on and on. If you think you have something we can use, but you are sure, email your questions to our Administrator: email us. Do you have Pasado's items for sale at the sanctuary (t-shirts, etc.)? Yes! We have a lovely donation gift shop that is only open during tours and other sanctuary events. We have a small selection of T-shirts, sweat shirts, drink-ware, gift items, and other logo memorabilia, as well as a few other fun items. All pricing is a suggested minimum donation, and all proceeds benefit the animals, so shop until you drop! For many of our tours, we include a wine element. Wine tasting, and wine sales, are only available on those days that we have a special permit, so keep your eyes peeled for those special event dates. For many other great items, styles, colors and sizes of Pasado's Safe Haven Gear, you can check out our CafePress online store here: PSH Gear at CafePress. Can we bring our dog? No. The sanctuary is not open to outside animals. Our animals come to us in every condition imaginable, including contagious conditions. To limit the spread of disease, our protocols do not allow outside animals to visit. We also enter large animal enclosures during the tour, so we cannot allow dogs, etc., to be exposed to this possible temptation to chase, herd or harm the animals… or the danger of BEING chased or injured. Weather permitting, you can leave the dogs in the car, but just understand that parking is OUTSIDE the sanctuary gate, so your car will not be monitored while you are away. Can we bring our cameras, video cameras, etc? Please do! People often tell us that their visit to Pasado's is an expereince that they never want to forget. You are going to make a lot of new friends with our rescued animals so snap as many photos as you want! What should I wear? Plan on wet, muddy, farm conditions! Good rubber or work boots, pants, and a good warm coat with a hood are essentials during the fall, winter, and spring months, everything else is optional. Umbrella? Gloves? Sunscreen? Sunhat? Sunglasses? The weather is unpredictable in the Cascade foothills! Can I bring my children? Children 12 and over are welcome to attend. There are hazards on a farm that could be dangerous to small children, so no exceptions will be made for public tours. Can I bring a guest that I forgot to register? Yes. You will need to let the person at the gate know that your guest is not on the list, and have them added. If prior to the tour, please email us and include a subject line referring to the tour. Why hasn’t my credit card been charged yet? If you chose to donate via your credit card when you registered, we process those all at once just prior to the tour after we close registration. If you would like it to go through sooner, just let us know. This ensures that anybody who had to cancel doesn’t get charged for THIS tour, and can reschedule for a different tour, and donate at that time instead. If you have any other items you think need to be added to this list, please email us!

SUMMARY:Directions
DESCRIPTION:You will receive directions to the PSH tour via email after you have registered and after we close registration on the Thursday prior to the tour. This process saves our staff time, which equals saving your donor dollars for the animals! Why? Pasado's Safe Haven rescues animals from all types of situations, including some very serious abuse cases. These cases often put the rescued animals, as well as our staff, at risk of retaliation. Because of this, our sanctuary location is not listed on our website or in other public locations. We have a responsibility to those animals and to our staff who live and work here to keep them safe. We kindly ask you to keep the location to yourself as much as you can and not share these directions beyond your registered tour.

SUMMARY:What to expect on a Pasado's Safe Haven Sanctuary Tour
DESCRIPTION:All tours include: A discussion and video all about Pasado's Safe Haven and what we do. A 2+ hour walking tour of the sanctuary grounds where you will get to visit Kitty City, Dog Towne, and the majority of our farm animal enclosures. You will get to meet many of our rescued animals and learn their stories! You will be up close and personal with animals that you may never have been this close to, so hold on to your hat (or a goat might eat it!) and expect some new experiences and some serious fun. A visit to the resource center and chance to mingle with other animal lovers while enjoying a snack and a beverage, or shop in our Donation Gift Shop which is only open only during tours. Some tours even include a wine tasting and the opportunity to buy our Pasado's private label wine! We will list this on the event posting for each date that we include this option. TIME: Unless otherwise noted, tours are from 1pm-4pm. The gate will open at approximately 12:45 and check in will begin. The tour starts promptly at 1pm and usually lasts until approximately 4pm. It is a guided tour of the sanctuary and once everyone gathers, the group will set off onto the farm and not return until much later. Please make every effort to be on time, or you may get locked out at the gate once it closes behind everyone. Keep in mind that this is a lengthy, often muddy, walking tour over rough terrain. Also, expect to have hay, cats, dogs, and other animals near you, so be prepared if you have allergies. WARNING: Our terrain is very rough and uneven and no assistive devices are available to those with limited mobility. Crutches, walkers, and wheelchairs of any kind are not recommended as our roads are gravel, our pastures are grass, dirt, mud, and rocks depending on the location and time of year, and our Sanctuary is not on even ground. You will go up and down many hills as you tour the farm. If you would like to speak to a particular staff member about something while you are visiting (like volunteering or donating), please let your tour guide know when you arrive so that we can make every effort to locate the appropriate person for you. Click here to REGISTER now. Use the pull down menu to pick your date. If no date is listed, it either means that no tours are scheduled yet, or that registration for your date has already closed.

SUMMARY:Rocktoberfest! Help us clean up the sanctuary!
DESCRIPTION:[caption id="attachment_10375" align="alignleft" width="454"] Please come and help us clean up the sanctuary before winter comes. Meet our rescued animals like Bentley![/caption] We are in desperate need of replacing rotting fencing and we need to clear the pastures of rocks to do much of it. So, Oct 6th is officially going to be Rocktoberfest at the sanctuary! The weather forecast calls for sun and 70 degrees - perfect for a fall work party. We will begin at 10 am and work until 2:30 pm with a lunch break around 12:30. At 2:30 we will have a group photo of the team and then a tour of our sanctuary. Our newest residents include two piglets, a baby llama, and we may be getting a calf. You will be able to meet them and many of our other rescued animals on the tour! What to bring: A sack lunch (with respect to our rescued animals who have been rescued from factory farming situations and from being served as dinner) we ask that your lunch does not include any meat, please. Bring water to keep you hydrated. What to wear: Long pants, closed toed shoes, layers for weather changes, and gloves. If you want to feed the animals on the tour you are welcome to bring any of the following: Lots of leafy greens such as Romain and red leaf lettuce, seedless grapes, thawed frozen corn, unsalted peanuts in the shell (the pigs love them), watermelon, carrots, and sliced apples. Contact StacieM@pasadosafehaven.org for directions and more info if you can join us!

SUMMARY:Paddywack - September 13th from 5pm-8pm
DESCRIPTION:The Community Cat Coalition (of which Pasado's is a member), will be debuting their new private label wine on September 13th at the Paddywack pet store in Mill Creek! The CCC is dedicated to making the lives of "Community Cats" better - through population control via TNR programs. The CCC traps feral cat colonies and ends their over breeding by providing spay and neuter services. If babies are found, they are socialized and re-homed. Won't you help us support the efforts to end cat overpopulation? Show your support by purchasing wine to help the "unwanted" cats that fill the streets and alleys of our cities, and rural areas of Washington! The two wines will be labeled "wine with Catitude" and will include a 2011 white Adagio from the Columbia Valley and a 2008 Merlot curtesy of Northwest Cellars. Please join us in thanking Paddywack for hosting this event at their store...if you haven't been in, please stop by!! Located in Mill Creek Town Center, Paddywack features the latest and greatest pet food, toys and supplies. Their staff is knowledgeable and friendly and they are dedicated to helping you maintain your pet’s health and happiness.

SUMMARY:Join Pasado’s Safe Haven on July 16th to Seek Justice for Kona
DESCRIPTION:Speak up for the dog, Kona, who was beaten in the head with a hatchet Monday, July 16th 8 a.m. - for a peaceful demonstration in front of the courthouse 9 a.m. - the hearing will be held in Room 250 Pierce County Superior Court, 930 Tacoma Avenue South, Tacoma, WA . Kona’s Case is # 12-1-01006-6. Dates and times can change at the last minute, so please check with the court house for updates: (253) 798-3654 In Orting, WA, a terrible crime was committed against an innocent animal. In March of this year, Kona the Golden Retriever bravely survived a hatchet attack at the hands of his neighbor, Ricky Lee Knowles. Knowles, 55, lured the innocent dog out of his own home and then brutally attacked him with a hatchet. If not for Kona’s cries that alerted others to his attack, Knowles likely would have killed the gentle dog. When Kona arrived at Sumner Veterinary Hospital, his injuries were life-threatening. The three-year-old pup was almost unrecognizable. His eyes were so swollen that he couldn’t open them. He could only take a few tentative steps at a time. X-rays revealed the severity of his attack: He had multiple fractures on his head and in his sinus cavity. Veterinarians operated on Kona, extracting three bone chips and damaged tissue from his head and tending to severe puncture wounds in his neck. Neighbors are amazed that Kona was able to survive the vicious attack that prosecutors say Knowles delivered. On Monday, July 16th, Kona will finally have a chance to receive justice. Join Pasado’s in a peaceful demonstration outside the Pierce County Superior Courthouse. You can show your support for Kona and try to ensure that justice is served. While Kona cannot speak for himself, we can be a unified voice of support for this victim of abuse. Pasado’s will bring t-shirts to wear, but please wear something that you can layer beneath this t-shirt. We may not be able to wear clothing with Pasado’s insignia when we are inside the courtroom. Participants will need to be able to frequently pull off the Pasado’s shirts before re-entering the courtroom. Pasado’s also welcomes assistance with making signs. Please make your signs respectful and clear. Message ideas include: PASADO’S ASKS FOR MAXIMUM PENALTY FOR KNOWLES THANK YOU PIERCE COUNTY FOR TAKING ANIMAL CRUELTY SERIOUSLY! SPEAK UP FOR KONA – ASSURE THAT ANIMAL CRUELTY IS TAKEN SERIOUSLY IN PIERCE COUNTY! Thank you for helping Pasado’s put an end to Animal Cruelty!

SUMMARY:Making a Difference: A Surprise Benefit for the Animals
DESCRIPTION:[caption id="attachment_9735" align="alignleft" width="454"] Mark's coworkers gave him a BIG, creative birthday surprise to honor his passion for animal welfare...[/caption] Animal lover Mark Dunn is the VP of Services at ADP Cobalt, but on Friday, July 6th, at 11:30 a.m., this animal lover was the VIP at a surprise birthday party celebrating his countless contributions to the animals. Cobalt specializes in Digital Marketing for the Automotive Industry and Mark is a very popular member of the Cobalt team. Mark has a passion for helping animals in need and he finally witnessed the profound impact of his lifetime of kindness and benevolence. Over 60 of Mark’s co-workers conspired to honor his birthday and his commitment to helping the animals. Friends state that Mark is a difficult person to surprise, but this unexpected birthday was one to remember for a lifetime. Mark’s compassion – and the generosity inspired by his actions – will also have a long-lasting impact for the animals. [youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxkQs_j8Igs [/youtube] In honor of his passion for helping save the lives of animals, Mark’s co-workers planned a surprise birthday party walk to benefit the rescued animals at Pasado’s Safe Haven. Those who made a donation gathered to surprise Mark and then proceeded on a one-mile walk through the city together, wearing a t-shirt created specifically for Mark’s special day. The event, which incorporated Mark’s initials, was coined “Make a Difference.” And this event truly did make a difference in the lives of animals who need our help the most. [caption id="attachment_9736" align="alignleft" width="454"] Duke and Nadia joined Mark and his coworkers on the walk, along with Pasado's Adoption Manager, Jessica.[/caption] The decision to raise money for an animal rescue – and specifically, Pasado’s – was an easy one. Mark has supported a number of animal rescues and charities over the last 10 years, including Pasado’s Safe Haven. Most of the animals he has been a guardian to have been rescue animals. Mark continues to be committed to the cause, working hard to support charities and attending animal-related charity events. Mark worked with Pasado’s in the past and this seemed to be the ideal choice, given his love of animals and his commitment to animal rescue. Thus far, $2600 was raised by over 130 associates. Participation was completely voluntary and $450 of the amount was matched by the ADP Gift Matching Program. [caption id="attachment_9737" align="alignleft" width="454"] Nadia impressed everyone with how well she navigated the city - even on two legs! Nadia is available for adoption.[/caption] At 11:30 on July 6th, those participating in the walk gathered outside ADP Cobalt at 605 5th Avenue, Seattle, WA. There was a brief talk and explanation of the details of the surprise to Mark as well as a check presentation to Pasado's Safe Haven. Everyone, including members from Pasado's Safe Haven and two rescued dogs, then proceeded on the one-mile walk throughout the city. With each footfall, every participant was reminded of the many lives that Mark has saved and supported. Here at Pasado’s Safe Haven, we cannot think of a better way to honor a life than by continuing to save the lives of others. From everyone at Pasado’s Safe Haven, we extend a heartfelt thank you to Mark Dunn and to Cobalt. Mark’s compassion and Cobalt’s creative surprise truly did make a world of difference for the animals. Mark, may you have a very happy birthday and many more to come. You truly are a champion for the animals.

SUMMARY:Speak up for Rosie on March 9th!
DESCRIPTION:Justice for Rosie! Meet us in front of the courthouse at 11:45 - 12:45pm for a peaceful vigil. The case will be heard at 1pm. Snohomish County Superior Court 3000 Rockefeller Everett, WA [caption id="attachment_2817" align="alignleft" width="454" caption="Rosie was shot to death by Des Moines police"][/caption] On November 7, 2010, Rosie the Newfoundland was shot and killed by officers from the Des Moines Police Department. Pasado’s Safe Haven has followed this case for 16 months, supporting Rosie’s owners, the Wrights, as they navigated the legal process seeking justice for their beloved dog. On January 31, 2012, Attorney Adam Karp filed an appellant brief, taking Rosie’s case to the Snohomish Superior Court. While the pursuit of this case has taken many months, it is always important to take a stand against cruelty. Rosie’s death did not have to happen, but ensuring that those who killed her will face the consequences of their actions can ensure that another beloved companion does not have to suffer a similar fate. Read the rest of Rosie's story.

SUMMARY:Home for the Howlidays 2011
DESCRIPTION:[caption id="attachment_5678" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="Home for the Howlidays 2010"][/caption] Join us! Home for the Howlidays 2011! They call them "Creature Comforts"...Pasado's Safe Haven calls it: food, warmth, care and love. These are not comforts, they are necessities. Join Pasado's Safe Haven staff and volunteers as we pass out some "creature necessities" to the animals who need it most. Pets are usually among the first to suffer during a financial crisis. No animal should have to sleep without shelter from the harsh winter, or without a blanket to keep them warm, or with hunger clawing at their stomach. No family should have to give up their pets because they can't afford food. Plans are underway to gather pet food, bedding, treats, leashes, collars, flea treatments and much more for this annual day of giving. If you have any of these items that you feel can be donated to this event, please be on the look out for our barrels and boxes in your stores. List of locations coming soon. If you love animals and think that your business would make a great "drop off" point, or if your business and customers can provide some of the needed items, please consider having a barrel or box at your location. Contact us here for details. (Pet stores are great locations, as are grocery stores, veterinary offices, feed stores, and anywhere that gets a lot of traffic from the public.) If you would like to volunteer for this amazing day of giving, please sign up here. If you are a veterinarian who would like to donate flea medications, or other over the counter items (ear mite treatment, de-wormer, etc), please contact us here. Last year we brought new and used dog and cat houses, bedding, food and treats and flea treatments to needy pets in over 10 LOCAL CITIES! We even delivered to some parrots! With your help we can make each year bigger and better than the last. We can make a bigger impact on our communities and the animals who are suffering along with their human families during these tough financial times by reaching out to more areas that need help. Join us for this annual day of giving. It could change your life. SUMMARY:Holiday Lights Sparkle for Beloved Sam & Pasado's
DESCRIPTION:Every holiday season, rain, snow, or shine, Barbara and Bob McConnell’s Kirkland home is adorned with a stunning display of lights. Beyond being beautiful, this display truly has the spirit of the season: It’s an annual fundraiser for Pasado’s Safe Haven hosted by some truly amazing supporters. As late autumn rolls toward winter, the McConnells bravely ascend their home, placing thousands of holiday lights in memory of Pasado, the beloved donkey who was a familiar fixture at Kelsey Creek Farm in Bellevue for many years. Pasado was killed 19 years ago by three teenage boys, but his legacy lives on in the good works done in his name. Read his full story here. This display incorporates more than 50,000 lights and is accompanied by a low-powered FM transmitter that synchronizes with the lights. Visitors can enjoy music from the warmth of their cars by tuning in to 107.3 FM. While some visitors stay for the full 20+ minute musical lineup, others stay longer, listening to their favorite Christmas songs and reflecting upon a season of love and joy. When there is no parking available, visitors are encouraged to park outside the crowd and walk toward the display. There are speakers posted to allow visitors to hear the music and enjoy the show from the sidewalk, as well. This thoughtful, dazzling display is well worth the trip – and the walk. You can see this stunning show Sun.-Thurs. from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 5:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. On Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day, the display goes from 5:00 p.m. to midnight. The McConnell House 13837 101st Pl. NE Kirkland, WA 98034This light show begins on December 1st and goes through New Year’s Day. For the past several years, the McConnells have collected donations for Pasado’s animal residents. If you don’t see Bob or Barbara mingling among the visitors with their two beloved corgis, Max and Michael, you can use one of the two donation buckets. Donations received throughout the holiday season are given to Pasado’s. Please stop by, watch the show, and consider making a donation today. When you visit, make sure to look for the sparkling white Corgi dog display. This is a tribute to Sam the corgi angel who was the McConnells’ first corgi. Sam absolutely loved to mingle with people who came to view his family’s light show. Since Sam passed away, the McConnells have made the display even larger and more brilliant in his memory. We never forget Sam or his place in the McConnell home and hearts.

SUMMARY:Pasado's is Growing!
DESCRIPTION:Pasado’s Safe Haven is committed to rescue, rehabilitation, and animal cruelty investigation. This month, Pasado’s will be adding to our team to better serve those who need our help the most. Pasado’s recently received a grant to hire two new Cruelty Investigators in Pierce County. Matt McNaughton, Pasado’s CEO, shared his gratitude about the receipt of this grant. “I’m extremely grateful to the Gary E. Milgard Family Foundation for their support of this project,” he stated. “Fighting animal cruelty is one of the most important things we do at Pasado’s. Adding additional resources in Pierce County will help crack down on perpetrators, educate the public on human-animal relationships, and save lives.” Animal cruelty is a crime and we take it very seriously. Your call to the police may mean the difference between life and death. Pasado’s expects that the new office will be confronting issues pertaining to puppy mills, dog fighting, and dog tethering as well as other acts of animal cruelty. If you witness an animal being abused or neglected, or you suspect that abuse is going on, the most important action that you can take is to make a report. If you witness animal cruelty in Pierce County, Washington, please report it immediately to our Pierce County office at 253-466-3722. We look forward to seeing friends old and new on October 14 from 11:00 – 2:00 as we celebrate our grand opening and open house of our new office at 315 39th Avenue Southwest, Suite 14, Puyallup, WA, 98373. You can also meet Pasado’s new Animal Cruelty Investigation Team. Refreshments will be served. Parking will be available behind the building.

SUMMARY:Speak up for Rosie in Court
DESCRIPTION: [caption id="attachment_3713" align="alignleft" width="405" caption="Rosie was a gentle giant and beloved family member who deserves justice."][/caption] Join Pasado's Safe Haven at court as we speak up for Rosie, the Newfoundland who was shot to death by Des Moines police in November 2010. Read more about her story here. What to expect: We will hear the court's response to the actions of the City of Des Moines taken to dismiss the charges and petition of the Wrights, Rosie's family, against the Des Moines police officers who shot Rosie in November. This hearing will address where this case stands now, if the courts will allow Mr. Wright to file a criminal complaint against the officers who shot his dog. [caption id="attachment_2817" align="alignleft" width="454" caption="Rosie was shot to death by Des Moines police"][/caption] This case is very important because it will help set precedence for all similar cases. Sadly, this happens very frequently. We hope that with a powerful presence, the court will see that the public cares and is paying attention to these cases. Our ultimate goal is to get dog behavior training implemented into the Police Academy as a mandatory part of their training. This training would enable officers to better assess dogs in all situations; teaching them how to work with a dog and how best to restrain or capture them safely, when needed. Rosie was an innocent dog who was senselessly hunted down and killed by improperly trained police officers. She was in her own yard as they screamed at her to “go home” When she tried to find safety in a neighbor’s yard they hunted her down and shot her for NO REASON. We must stand up for her; Rosie needs your voice! Together, we can make a difference! We need no less than 50 people so please ask others to join you. We know it’s a long drive for some, but imagine if it was your beloved pet. WE NEED YOU TO BE THERE! It is very important that we get a great turnout for this day; to show the judge, that the public is watching, that this is important and that her injustice will not be forgotten. MEET US AT 9am in front of the courthouse for a peaceful presence for one hour before the hearing starts. We will have special signs made for this, with Rosie's picture and her name on them. August 2nd at 9 am in front of the Snohomish Court House Snohomish County Courthouse 3000 Rockefeller Avenue Everett, WA The hearing will start at 10 am RSVP to kimk@pasadosafehaven.org so we can have a t-shirt available for you!

SUMMARY:Margo Hill Trial-Cancelled
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE - Margo Hill took a plea deal with the prosecutor. She pled to two counts of 2nd degree Animal Cruelty. This case is now closed. There will be no trial on June 16th. Margo Hill is a long time case that Pasado's Safe Haven has followed, as have Law Enforcement. She has abused and neglected horses for years. One year ago, Miss. Hill was charged with 6 counts of Animal Cruelty in the 2nd Degree. Miss. Hill has continued to offend, and one month ago, was again charged with 2 additional counts of 2nd Degree Animal Cruelty when two of her horses were seized. The court case has been canceled due to Miss. Hill accepting a plea deal.

Some of the ways you can help: Dogs-help clean, walk, and socialize with the Dog Towne residents Cats-help clean, feed, and socialize the kitties of Kitty City Farm Animals-groom, clean, feed, and assist with many types of farm animals Open or Close the farm-wake them up in the morning, or tuck them in at night! There are many off-site events that you can attend and help with. You can concentrate on fund-raising if that is what you love. There is always office work to be done. Pick up/Drop off donations Pick up/Drop off animals for vet appointments Spend your holidays with the animals! Assist with Facilities and building improvement projects Grounds keeping on 85 acres is a big job, and we need a lot of help from our volunteers to keep the Sanctuary clean, safe and tidy. Just email us here, and include, your name, address, phone and email address. Also full names of all attendees. (Please make note of minors age 12-17) as they will need permission slips from a parent.) Get your picture taken with your Mom and a rescue animal! Between the wine and our Gift Shop, you can take care of your Mother's Day presents, and all proceeds benefit the animals!
