Tyson will capture your heart , he trys so hard to be strong and independent when he is not around his human friends , but when you show up, the relief of him being in safe hands is so obvious , he can hardly contain himself, but he does, getting as close as he can,and then charms you into staying with him. Be his eyes , and he will give back so much more!

I finally got the opportunity to spend some time with Tyson. What a special boy he is. I wanted to wrap him up and take him home.

Tyson is going to his new home, I am so happy for him!  Yesterday I spent some time hanging out with him and loving him up  and he of course, loving me back. I hope that his new family will send us pictures and better yet, come and visit us at Pasado.!

Glad to see he has a new home. I have a boxer and they are fantastic dogs. They are also great with kids!

  • Amy and Ted Wolkenhauer

    When I first met
Tyson, I was jealous.  Jessica opened the
pen, let my husband and me in, but it wasn’t me with whom Tyson was
affectionate—it was my husband.  I think
my heart broke a little just then because before we met Tyson I had done much
research about blind dogs and Boxers in general, just trying to see if we could
be good caregivers for him.  I was
already attached.  One look at his big
brown eyes, and beautiful coat, you’ll be sunk.
To the touch, his ears are like sable, his jowls warm and squishy.  Tyson isn’t a licker.  He nuzzles warm, breathy kisses.  You’ll melt.
    I promise.

    When you are with
Tyson, you’ll feel parental pride.  Like
recently when out on one of our weekly excursions, Ted and I had stopped in
Leavenworth at a Beer n Brat joint.  The
whole place stared at us, well, at Tyson really.  A table of older men and women repeatedly gawked
in awe.  We caught words like, “beautiful,
wow [and] amazing,” a couple that had been enamored with each other, stopped to
become enamored with Tyson, and the best was a grown man, who had turned into
mush pot as he cooed over Tyson’s scrunchy Boxer nose, “oohh what quewt wittle
nosy wosy you have, ahhh…what a sweet wittle guy…yes you are… (Insert
unintelligible words.)” This, as the guy rubbed Tyson’s nose and ears, ignoring our presence entirely.  Oh, and Tyson soaked it all up, of course.

    Tyson loves to be
bathed, but be careful or he’ll drink the bath water.  It must be the touch, because he behaves so
well even when you trim his nails.  He
looooves a good muscle massage.  Repeat, Tyson
looooves a good muscle massage.  He will roll
for a belly rub, and don’t be surprised if he sits on your lap.  Tyson doesn’t care about his size, why should
you?   To be part of your life, to be part of a
family is so relaxing for him—he gains comfort and pride from simply being near
you.  When hot, his jowls puff up like an
    older tractor’s smoke stack—it’s comedy.
    When sad, he’ll snuggle closer.
When you fall asleep next to him, he’ll fall asleep with his head atop
you, or at the very least, reach out a paw to touch you.   Tyson is uncommonly affectionate and so
enamored with life that it would be like the feeling you or I get when taking
off our shoes to feel the first grass of springtime…only every breath is like
that for him.  Tyson will teach you how
    to enjoy life more.

    Frankly, it’s hard
to understand how a dog being blind, can get around so easily.  But as we have found, Tyson’s other senses
are so heightened—remarkably so—that it is fairly easy for any stranger to
assume he has vision.  Tyson is just that
capable.  As such, being on top of other
dog owners is a must.  Other dog parents
just think it is okay to allow their dogs to run amok without direction—believing
they are simply experiencing life and nature, which is true, but for a blind
dog like Tyson, that can be intimidating.
You’ll just have to be like a protective parent with him, and he’ll love
you for your care and concern.  That
being said, stairs are still difficult, he does get tangled in table legs, and
he will need a guide in new places.  In
fact, you’ll notice after time, how you are often more uneasy than he is.  Tyson is remarkably smart.

    As you walk him, have
the presence of mind to be Tyson’s eyes.
He doesn’t need coddling, he’s just blind.  Keep him close around cars—they are loud and
scary.  Always keep him to the inside on
a sidewalk and confirm your presence with him when extra loud noises travel
past.  Tyson’s a quick learner.  He even knows that when doors open, you
generally have to step up.  He loves
truck rides, and can manage the getting-in and getting-out very easily after
some direction from you.  Sounds help,
smells help.  He can learn the layout of
any home or yard quickly, just help him with the tough spots.  He’s not afraid to run if you let him
    off-leash, so don’t get in a comfort zone just because he’s blind, he’s a
    curious guy.

    That being said, Tyson
doesn’t mind other dogs.  He’s been to
Everett beach with dogs aplenty, to varying parks and lakes around the area,
and even on walks around our neighborhood, though we have refrained contact
with them.  If he feels that there will
be a problem, he lets you know, but if he is generally okay with the situation,
you’ll notice he doesn’t react, because his first and main priority in life—is you.
He may fall more madly in love with you than him, but it’ll be a close
    match.

    Tyson’s affection for
you, which is all-consuming, is like being in a new love relationship.  He is constantly enamored with you, on his
best brightest behavior (usually), and can’t wait to snuggle, cuddle or nuzzle
after an absence.  Oh, and hug.  Tyson actually hugs!  Due to his blindness, he is more docile than
most Boxers.  That being said, he still requires
two daily walks.  He’s a strong, muscular
breed that simply needs exercise.  But
equally, he needs rest.  He’s got some
age on him, and although you wouldn’t guess it, after a full day, he gets
pretty tuckered out.  A soft bed inside a
warm home with loving people to surround him will only be what he asks.  Tyson’s needs are simple.  Tyson is an ideal dog.

    When let to roam free
(in a fenced yard) Tyson will wander, explore and seek out all smells.  He’s not afraid to play, loves to have air
blown on his nose, but be careful, his adorable toes are big!  He doesn’t mind being picked up and carried,
if you feel unsafe about other pets and just want to remove him from the
situation.  Yet, he does need a two-part strong
male or female figure.  One is
    strength.  Boxers are healthy animals
originally bred to be courageous, strong and driven.  As such, Tyson is very protective of you,
making sure you are okay is his priority, and back to the point about other
dogs.  He is going to react if he thinks
you’re not going to be okay—he wants for your safety.  Tyson is intelligent and responsive, not
reactive.  Two is command.  Tyson needs direction, commands and someone
who will stick to that.  He listens very
well, was obviously well-trained, but when he wants to be stubborn, he’ll need
a strong person to maintain the control.
Tyson respects that and will respect you for it, but patience with any creature
or loved one is a given, not that you’ll need much.  Again, Tyson’s needs are simple and easy to fulfill.  Appreciate this part of him—it’s quite beautiful.

    Tyson doesn’t care for
rawhide, but loves beef tendons (All The Best).
He doesn’t care for chicken, either, but loves prime rib.  But, again, he is a Boxer, and they do have
particular diets to attend to.  It’s as
easy as the right food in the right amount, and managed treats.  Also, because Tyson was found emaciated, he’ll
likely gorge himself when eating as a continued response to such travesty.  That being said, he likes to beg for food,
like any dog, but if you are firm, he backs down without issue.  Like I said, he’s really well-trained.

    Tyson is the biggest
goofball.  He does things that’ll make
you laugh so hard, you’ll snort.  He
snores; he farts; he slobbers and rolls around on grass like a silly spaz.  You will get attached and love him like a
    child.  His trust is unconditional,
vigilant. Tyson is tolerant and forgiving.
Leaving him behind for someone else to become his owner has been
    devastating.  I have sobbed
uncontrollably on many occasions, but Tyson will need to be in a home without
other cats—we have 3.  My husband and I
tried on seven different occasions to have someone help determine his trainability for
cat-life, but we were met with an overtly odd request, a phone disconnected after weeks
of conversation, a business for lease after weeks of waiting, busy, no-replies and
general assumptions about the Boxer breed, but no definitive answer about
Tyson, the dog.  We even tried contacting
    a pro-dog trainer on the t.v. circuit and a professional dog-trainer training
    academy.  And nothing.  No avail.
As such, we asked ourselves, what if we were preventing Tyson from being
with someone who was far better suited than us, and with no cats?  What if all this waiting was preventing
someone like you from meeting him?  Was
    that fair to him?

    You will are going to
be very lucky, whoever you are, when you get to adopt Tyson.  You will have a loyal friend, a trusted
confidante, and a buddy to be your partner in adventures and life.  You will not be sorry one moment of one
single day of your life when you have decided to invite Tyson into your
home.  You will be the envy of many
people who have tried, but invariably failed to give him a permanent home (not without ardently trying).  You will love him like a child, and worry
about him like one, too.  You’ll have one fantastic partner in this dog.
You’ll have never known joy like this.  Tyson is amazing for lack of a better word, simply amazing.

From my dad….”There is an adage I use on occasion:  after knowing dogs I like them better than most people.  The depth of feeling can only be understood by those that have been fortunate enough to be associated with one.  Absolute unquestioning love for you, enough that they would lay down their life for you without even a microsecond of thought.  They create and share the best moments of life with you becoming kindred spirits.  The amazing thing is that they are there for those that abuse them just as they are for those that love them.  People could learn a lot from them.”

  • Pam

Beautifully written and from deep inside the heart and all so very true.
Amy and Ted, you are such loving and sincere  people, and I’m so glad to know you!

Tyson’s Monday adventures continue to thrill.  This week we traveled across Washington down to Kennewick where Tyson was met with sunshine!  We ordered take out and ran amok through the grass, making sure we fully enjoyed the warmth of a beautiful fall day!  Tyson loves car rides!  He politely jumps into the back seat and the hum of the road generally puts him out for a good nap until he is ready to wake up and get some attention.  We shared Beef Tendons with some other dogs and made friends in Benton City.  Tyson was so tuckered out by the end of the day, he tried sleeping while standing up–like a horse.  Eventually the sway got the best of him and he crashed onto his bed, snoring.

Thank you SO much for sharing this – I love that you both LOVE Tyson SO much!! Sorry I missed seeing you two when you came back to return him. He is such a sweet boy! V

    Oh!…that’s
great helpful, it’s so right to me! Million thanks for the article,

  • Amy and Ted Wolkenhauer

My husband and I look forward to fostering Tyson every Monday.  You think you may know what you are going to get when you adopt any dog–be they young or old, but with Tyson, we can tell you, you are going to get a loving and devoted companion for the many, many years ahead,  This past Monday, we carved pumpkins and watched Tyson run off with pieces and parts for his enjoyment.  He frolicked in our back yard, playfully enticed by the event!  His blind disposition really has no effect on his gaiety, in fact, most people are surprised to find that he is blind because he manages so entirely well.  Afterward, we cuddled him up in a warm blanket upon his bed like a cocoon while we chatted out beneath the stars.  Tyson loved every minute.

Tyson is a devoted and loving friend.  He is a loyal and kind soul.  With great anticipation, we look forward to our next Monday adventure with him!

  • Virginiab

Amy and Ted, I know I have said this before, but knowing you are coming to get him every Monday makes it a little easier to leave the sanctuary on Saturdays….. Tyson went on two outings recently to Microsoft events – he did very well and of course everyone that meets him, adores him. He is one of the sweetest dogs and I love petting, kissing and hugging him. You can tell he loves this attention! He needs a home soon…….. Thanks again for writing!

  • Pam

Hi Amy and Ted, I look forward to seeing you guys when you come to take Tyson on outings. And I love to read the comments describing you’re time together! Thankyou!

  • Amy and Ted Wolkenhauer

Mondays with Tyson…  We love our Mondays with Tyson, but we didn’t have the full length of time we had liked. While at the Barbershop, he greeted everyone who walked through the door, was so well-behaved, and even snuggled with another gentleman while he waited for his partner to get a hair cut.  Lying upon my feet, someone asked if Tyson was hypnotized.  This person had never seen a Boxer so well-behaved that he was shocked.  Tyson walked proudly in Madison Park, Capitol Hill and Bellevue–eager to receive pets and love from everyone around.  We walked him through Home Depot, a kitchen store and a Halloween store without issue.  Although Tyson was sad to see us cut short our Monday adventure, he remained the ever kind and ever loving dog.

  • Pam

What a sweet surprise seeing a carved pumpkin outside of Tyson’s yard.! Even resembles him.! Thanks Amy and Ted , you put a smile on my face!!
